The Freezer is frosting with ice-buildup on edge of doors and inside.

Sounds like you simply have a defrost problem going on. Without the model number that looks like this 321.456789 example I am not sure what parts you will need. If you can find your correct model number I can show you what to look for. Things that fail with a defrost problem are defrost heater, defrost thermostat and defrost control or timer, Thanks Sea Breeze

Model # bx2255w Amana Refridgerator bottom freezer works but refridge isn't cooling any more. Is it time to retire our approx 15 year old fridge or is there an easy fix?

If you have high humidity or the door gets opened a lot, the evaporator coil may need a good defrosting. There are defrosting devices in the unit like the timer, heating coils, thermostats that could be bad. There should also be a small fan in the freezer that transfers the air to the refrigerator section. If that's not spinning only the freezer will work.

If you find the fan and it's working you can do a thorough manual defrost by removing the food, unplugging the unit and letting it set for a day with the doors wide open. Have some big towels handy :)

After a day, plug it in and see what it does (don't add food, yet). If it cools down then you will know that the compressor is still good and it's worthwhile to fix.

Easy fixes: Timer and fan.
Moderate fix (cheap part - more labor) - Defrost thermosat
Pain in the **** fix: Defrost heaters.

I have an 18.4 frost proof, fridge, and the freezer is cold, but the the fridge is not cool. I moved it out and can't see where there might be a problem. I turned the switch to colder, and still it is...

Is the fan in the freezer working? If not, after disconnecting power. Remove back cover in freezer section. Check if fan blade will turn. If not, bad fan motor. If it will, check voltage to fan. If voltage is present, bad fan motor. No voltage check wiring. A bad defrost timer will cause a no voltage problem. With cover still off. Is evaperator frozen up. If so this will cause resticted air flow to fresh food section. Not defrosting. On these units for a defrost issue. Bad defrost timer, Plug to heater on right side of evaperator not fully seated. Defrost thermostat on right side.Check for continuity when cold. And of course defrost heater. Check for continuity. All common for this unit. Good luck. Be safe.

Hello,

The most common issue with this is a failed defrost heater. You can repair this yourself and save a couple hundred dollars, I know this unit very well. If you want to fix this your self we can help you.

Ice accumulating behind plate inside freezer......have had all components checked, all ok, aside from perhaps the timer.......found an interesting tidbit somewhere about being able to reset a digital timer...

you may need to replace the defrost timer.the more likley cause would be a faulty defrost sensor not telling the timer when to defrost.
Part # 5303918214-Defrost sensor
Part # 240375803- Adaptive defrost timer

Fridge won't stay cold

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

OR
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Magic chef fridge, 50 - 55 degrees frost inside freezer. whats wrong and how do i fix it. no $$ for repair man. vacumed fan etc in bottom back side of fridge (was really dusty). just emptied food into...

You have one of 2 problems - 1. a bad defrost heating element; 2. a bad defrost timer. The heating element is in the freezer under the coil. The defrost time is probably in the refrigerator.

Whirlpool fridge with top freezer.( no ice maker )

check if you have frost build up at the back side of the freezer section.

if you do, then it is a defrosting problem.

you could have a problem with the defrost timer, the defrost heater , or the bi-metal.

if there is no frost accumulation, that would be something more and you have to elaborate on what you observe with the unit to help me further troubleshoot your unit.

Maytag MSD2651HES fridge not cooling freezer works find

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
