First try to restart the printer. If it still won't work, uninstall the printer driver (control panel-programs & features), then reinstall it using the CD that came with (make sure to disconnect the USB cable before you reinstall) If you do not have the CD that came with the printer go to the below web site and follow the steps provided:
Hmmm...it says to install or RUN device software...have you tried to run the software program? Try to open it up, and see if you can scan from the program. If that doesn't work, I would reload the CD and try again. Could be a problem with the CD, officejet, or computer driver, but it sounds like the computer driver is failing to work, which is why I recommend reloading it. Good luck...hope this helps.

Pressing of scan button feature is no longer supported by hp drivers, if installed correctly one scans using scanners and fax
When the scan button is pressed on the printer, nothing happens. The scan button does not work correctly.

Click New Scan .
Click File and then click Scan .

The drivers in the Windows Vista operating system do not support button press functionality on the printer.
