Question about Gardner Bender GB Electrical GMT-19A 19 Range Analog Multitester

I have a GB Instruments GMT-19A. I want to measure current under 500ma. Scale selections are 500ma, 50ma, and 5ma. The scale readings include 250, 50, 10. What scale reading do I use to read the results for each ma scale selection? The instruction book that came with the meter are ambiguous and doesn't explain how to measure current under 500ma.

You would use the 500ma range to read anything that is under 500 ma. If the reading comes up below 5o ma, then you can disconnect and change the range to 50 ma. I say disconnect before you change the range because it can damage the instrument otherwise. ie: do not use the switch to change the range while it is already connected in circuit and measuring in progress.
Remember that to measure current, you have to have the meter in series with the load and the supply.

Hi Ray,

The manual says that when reading measurements taken with the meter on the 500mA range, the 250 scale is used, and the values indicated by the pointer are to be doubled in this situation.

You can find the manual for the GMT-19A here. Section 5 (page 9 & 10) details use of both the Amp and mA ranges and scales of the meter.

To check the current, you'll have to set up your equipment to the mA (milliamp) position. It's located on the right side of the equipment, on the "A" section. The test leads should be positioned accordingly and it is: black in the middle connector (common) and red on the right connector (mA).
It's safe to start measuring the current in a higher scale. Safe for the equipment. So start measuring with the equipment set to the 10A scale and the red test lead on the left connector (which reads 10ADC or so) and check the reading to see if it's below 0.2A, which is the same equivalent of 200mA. If it is, then it is safe to start reading the milliamp (mA). Undo the leads to the mA port and change the equipment scale to 200mA. If you don't observe this and you try read a current higher than 200mA, your equipment might burnout.
But wait: to measure current, you have to open up the circuit that you pretend to do the reading. You can only measure voltage (not current) with the circuit "closed" (also be careful to not try to measure voltage while the equipment is set to measure Amps. Leads will meltdown!!).
To do this, remove one of the batteries terminal. Doesn't matter if it is positive or negative. Then, with the equipment already set to the scale you want, connect one lead to the terminal and the other to the cable or wire that you just disconnected. This will provide continuance of the circuit, having the current going through the DVM and displaying the actual current through that circuit.

These scales use sensors to measure the electrical resistance of the human body to calculate body fat. If you are not stepping on the scale barefoot then that might be the reason why it is timing out. These scales require you to step on it barefoot so it can take a measurement through your feet. And using the height and gender information in combonation with the resistance measurement it can calculate your approximate body fat precentage. If you are stepping on the scale barefoot then make sure that your feet are properly placed into the sensors and avoid any movement. Let me know if you have any questions.

Unfortunately, it's the scale, but it's not broken. It simply is telling you inaccurate information.
Some scales utilize Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology. BIA uses very low levels of electrical impulses running from one metal contact point/lead to another. Your body acts as the connector between the two contact points, thus completing the circuit. Not all scales use this means for calculating body fat percentage due to poor reliability and high fabrication costs.This method of measurement requires very large contact points, as well as clean and moist skin exposure. If you have dry/calluced feet, which is normal for most Americans, the sensors can not accurately measure due to skin resistance. Dry skin acts as a resistor to electrical impulse. Electricity passes through muscle and fat at different rates. However, its measurements may be thrown off by how hydrated you are and how much you've eaten; it may be too inaccurate for anything other than comparative use. Users are encouraged to establish a baseline measurement and repeat measurements under consistent conditions over time to detect changes.
Many less expensive models simply use a body-fat calculator to average your imputed height in inches, waist measurement in inches and the current weight measurement recorded in lbs. The scale compares your measurement with the ideal norms inputed during the manufactoring process, thus giving you a comparison vs.imputed norms. People who are very, very fit can get numbers 3 to 5 percent higher than their true percent body fat. Because they don't have a lot of fat inside their muscles(visceral fat), the simple tape measure calculation test cannot adjust as it should indicate.
Conversely, if a person is skinny but not fit, this body fat test may yield a number 3 to 5 percent lower than his or her true percent body fat. Though they look thin, unfit skinny people really have more than the usual amount of fat inside their muscles, which you can't see from the outside.
In either case, the scale is not necessary a measurement tool, due to high variables of test inaccuracy and interuser reliabilty; but, it is a good tool for comparing whether or not you are gaining/losing body fat.
If you would like a more accurate tool for simply measuring your body fat, you can pick up some pinch-calipers online for about the price of a scale. They come with an instructional pamphlet, very easy to use.

The scale may have instructions on the bottom of the scale. (Example for the Tanita: The Ultimate Scale w/ the body fat analysis). The instructions on the back state the following steps: Step 1: press both the "Set" and the triangle buttons. Step 2: press the "triangle" button until you select the appropriate weight measurement (a) kilogram, (b) stone lbs or (c) lbs. Step 3: press the set button.
