Use a memory card reader and format it on your computer.

read the instructions and look for the format or initialize disk option in the camera

If you cant find it tell me which camera your using and i might be able to find a manual

Cannot retrieve photos in camera, but are on memory card

You can very often recover deleted pictures from a camera memory card or USB Memory stick. However, to increase the chances of being able to recover pictures after they have been deleted you must not save any new photos, files or data to it.

When you delete pictures (or any files) from a memory card or USB memory device the data itself isn't deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren't saved to the memory card in the meantime.

One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software. Recommended asoftech photo recovery as I used it before. download from link below

I need to delete a number of pictures at once off my SD card and would like to do it via my computer but can't find out how. Failing that how do I delete a number of pictures from the SD card period. I...

First you will need to attach the USB cord to your camera and then attach the other end to your PC. Once you have attached both ends, you will either have a program that automatically loads up when the camera is detected by the PC or you will have an option menu of which to open up.

I personally find using Windows Explorer a better way. To do so, do the following (this is assuming you are running on XP)

Start
Programs
Accessories
Choose Windows Explorer
When that opens click the + on My Computer
Look for Removable Disk (F:) ( NOTE: F can be any letter depending on your system set up)
Click on Removable Disk and choose DCIM
Then choose ###_PANA (it may be named something else)
All your pictures should be here

Now, to delete them you can

A: Delete them all by choosing one picture and then hold down the CTRL key and press A. This will highlight them all. Then hit your DELETE key. Or...

B: To choose certain ones you want to delete: Hold down the CTRL key and left click the pictures you want to delete with your mouse. When you are done choosing the ones you don't want, hit your DELETE key.

This will remove all or your selected pictures from your smart card entirely.

If you are using the program that came with the camera, you can still use the same method using the CTRL key above to delete the pictures you don't want. It functions the same way regardless.

But be warned, try it out on a couple pictures first to see if you understand, because once they are gone, they are gone.

Good luck!

If I reformat the disk in my camera do I loe all

Yes, formatting the card will erase all the pictures on a card. Formatting initializes the card with an empty file system, which can be useful when a card becomes corrupted.

Disk says not enough space on disk to finilize?

Each time you execute finalization, the disc remaining space will decrease by approximately 13 MB. If you don’t have enough room, it won’t allow you to finalize the disc.
To finalize this disc, you have to delete some pictures to make enough space. But don’t worry, before you delete those pictures, you can save them to your computer.
Find out the CDs came with your camera, refer your manual page 51 - 61 to install ‘PIXELA PTP Manager’ , connect your camera and computer with USB cable, and copy some pictures to your computer, then delete the pictures on camera side. If still not enough room, copy more and delete more. make it enough to do the finalization.

Copying pictures from computer to memory card

i have seen this error and i dont know why it does that. you may want to try buying a micro disk setup that fits into a sd adapter that will fit in your camera.

then you can take out the micro disk when full and put it on a usb adapter and plug right into a usb port.

i know this sounds like more work but so far i havent had a lock up on that or error yet. go to tigerdirect.com if you want to see the different adapters for the sd disk and micro disk and usb etc....

maybe this might help

Wont work with windows vista

I assume that you have already tried plugging in your camera and letting Vista look for the correct driver! If you have your original disk that came with the camera, try it. Even though it was not for Vista. Most USB equipment require that you first install the drivers before you plug in the device. I have not checked the Vivitar web site since I still use Windows XP but they might have a driver available for your camera. Keep in mind that you do not need to use the USB port to download your pictures to the computer!!! You could purchase a USB Card Reader that is Vista compatable and simple remove the Memory card from your camera and let the Card Reader transfer your pictures to the computer. When you have finnished copying your pictures to the computer, do not let the computer delete them! If you do, the camera may not work properly. I once let the computer blank out the memory chip and then my camera would not work until I reformated the chip with the camera. Then the chip would work again. Simply use your camera to remove the pictures after you have put them on your computer.
