Question about Leviton 1000W / 20A 1HP-120V - 6230M-I - Ivory

1 Answer

I purchased the 6161T Preset Electronic Timer Switch and I am struggling to hook it up. I am trying to install it in a Hallway that has two switches for the same light. I have a Red, Black and White wire coming out of the wall and the switch has two black and a green wire. When I connect it, and press a timer button it makes the light flash.

The timer you have purchased will not work for 3-way switching.

We know this because the wires are color-coded.
And you have 2 black wires.
Good job providing that information so I can see what you have.
Both your timer wires are black, and that tells the electrician that the timer is made for single-pole only.

That being said, there are timers that have the same color wires as your 3-way switch, but the timer has to say it works for 3-way circuit.
Usually the instruction sheet or package will say, 'for single-pole.'
Or it will say, 'for single-pole and 3-way.'

1) Aube makes programmable 7-day timers for a 3-way installation.
But this timer is not for countdown.

2) I am searching the web for a 3-way countdown timers, and Levition offers one, but they require you to replace both 3-way switches and then install a 'master-and-remote' combo.
This means each timer is a different model number.
If you want help sorting out that purchase, add a comment and I will research the Levition site.

3) Smarthome sells a countdown timer for 3-way circuits.
It appears to be exactly the product you are wanting.
The product has 95 ratings with 4-1/2 stars
http://www.smarthome.com/2476ST/SwitchLinc-Timer-INSTEON-Countdown-Wall-Switch-Timer-Non-Dimming-White/p.aspx
The product manual is right there on the Smarthome page.
They provide an installation video.
Smarthome is very customer friendly.

I specialize in timers and electrical devices, but I do not know the product shown above.
However I can help you install it.
Add a comment and I will help further.

6161T timer switch LEDs just blink for the fan. The light works on the fan. The fan works on straight 120v.

Leviton 6161 is shown on Leviton as 500 watt incandescent-only 4-level dimmer that cannot control a fan.
If this is a ceiling fan and light, then search for fan light dimmer, or fan control,

If this is bathroom fan-light installation, you are needing a countdown timer rated for both bulb and fan... which will require Neutral wire...
Different timer choices with manuals appear following link:

Are the switches bad .? If so this would be strange as both switches are at the same time .thanks

Is this new installation?
Sounds like timer is wired wrong.
Or you are replacing 3-way switch with the single-pole timer.

I installed a woods indoor timer model 59018 on a 3 pole circuit for my outside lights. The lights would not work until I installed a jumper wire from the red line to the white line of my other wall...

Woods 58018 is White-colored 120Volt 7-day programmable timer that replaces single-pole switch only.
I am not certain what is meant by 3-pole circuit.
If you mean 3-way circuit where more than one switch control same light, as you find with hallway light, then 59018 is not correct timer.

Open following links to see list of timers suited for 3-way switch replacement.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15312
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html#ST01C

Timers that work for 3-way do not replace 3-way switch wire-for-wire.
Read manual carefully.
When you replace 3-way switch with a timer, one 3-way switch is replaced, and other 3-way switch remains.
The remaining 3-way switch is always rewired so the 3-way timer works. AND each brand of timer requires slightly different wiring parameter.
Some 3-way timers can only replace the 3-way switch located closest to circuit breaker box, commonly called the LINE side. Others can replace either LINE side or LOAD side 3-way., and wiring is different for each. Some timers require neutral wire and some are battery-powered.

Add a comment with exact information about switch and wiring you are working on for suggestion of best timer for that purpose.

I have a GE smart timer 15086 I followed the instruction and the light blinks when you turn it on. Please help

I test timers, and no damage is done.
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15086

Sounds like you wired red and white wires together, or installed timer in place of 3-way switch.
15086 will not replace a 3-way switch.
For example, when 2 switches control hallway light, that is 3-way.
Link above has list of timers that replace 3-way switch.

How to wire 15071, 15086, 15265, 15266 timers:
1) Switch has 2 insulated wires. Take switch wires and connect them to timer-black-wire and timer-red-wire. Choose either one for now.
2) In back of electric box are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect timer-white to these wires. This will power timer electronics.
3) If electric box does not have white wires described above, then connect timer-white to bare ground, along with timer-green wire.
4) Turn on electricity, and push ON-OFF button located in each corner. If lights come on, timer is wired correctly. If lights do not come on, then reverse timer-red and timer-black wires.

I have the unit wired and it does not wotk.I have black to black, red to red green to ground and white to white, any thoughts? Thank you

Electrician test wiring before connecting anything.
First of all, you don't mention what type of switch was replaced.

1) Leviton 6230 countdown timer is made to replace single-pole light switch only.
Single pole is where 1 switch controls the Load (light fan motor)

Your wiring sounds like 3-way switch.
3-way is where 2 switches control same Load.
For example a hallway usually has 3-way switches.

To confirm. If old switch has 1 dark screw, 2 brass screws, and 1 green screw, then that is 3-way switch. Use Leviton LTB15, LTB30, LTB60, LTB02, LTB12 countdown timer for 3-way.
Smarthome sells product and shows .pdf manual
http://www.smarthome.com/4255/Leviton-LTB60-1LZ-4-Button-10-20-30-60-Minute-Countdown-Timer-Switch/p.aspx

2) If old switch has 2 brass screws and 1 green screw then that is single-pole switch.

3) If you are replacing single-pole switch, here are testing & wiring instructions for Leviton timer.
Remove device and separate wires for testing.
Use ordinary two wire tester.
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power.
Do not untwist wires that were twisted together before you started.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire. This wire will connect to timer black wire.
Now you know Hot wire.
Test Hot wire to each of the other wires, excluding bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on neutral. Timer white wire connects to Neutral wire.
If box does not contain Neutral wire, then timer white wire connects to bare ground.

Timer green wire connects to bare ground wire.
Timer red wire connects to wire going to Load.

I'm trying to install this Woods 59008 automatic fan timer in the bathroom. My old on/off switch only has three wires....and I that a light switch next to that. The woods 59008 has a red, black, white...

Sure George.

These in-wall timers have extra wire to operate the electronics located inside timer.
You said your old switch has 3 wires.
The new timer can only replace on-off switch that has 2 brass screws and a green screw.
If old switch has 2 brass screws and a dark screw, that is a 3-way switch.
Typically a 3-way switch is found at both ends of hallway.
The Woods 95008 countdown timer is not made to replace 3-way:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59000

Here's what to do:
1) Switch has 2 wires (plus bare ground wire). Take switch wires and connect them to timer-black-wire and timer-red-wire. Choose either one for now.
2) In back of electric box are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect timer-white to these wires. This wire will power timer electronics.
3) If electric box does not have white wires described above, then connect timer-white to bare ground, along with timer-green wire.
4) Turn on electricity, and push override button located below the OFF button. If lights come on, timer is wired correctly. If lights do not come on, then reverse timer-red and timer-black wires.

If I want the TIMER 6230M to stay in ON position for longer than 30 minutes, how can I make it works like a toggle ON/OFF switch?

The Leviton 6230 is a countdown timer with maximum time of 30 minutes.
The other times are 15minutes, 5minutes and 3minutes.
The timer has a manual override.
Push the bottom button and the timer works like a switch.

Leviton also make the 6260 countdown ... with 10-20-30-60minute times.

How do i hook this switch up to my exsisting 2 wire (black-power, and white to light) box

This switch reqiures that you need a neutral. From what you have described you do not have a neutral in the box only a hot and a switch leg. You will have to pull a new wire into box in addition to what you have now.

Bathroom fan

Hi there might be a couple of issues. The first one how old is your fan, if it is an older model motor maybe running down? Try setting your switch on the fan at high. Also the polarity of wiring at the switch or the fan might be swaped. This means the white and balck wires may not be in the right polarity.
