Question about GE Monogram ZICS360NRRH C... Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

3 Answers

Defrosting Problem Hi, We have a monogram side-by-side built-in refrigerator. Fresh food side temperature goes up(warmer) and freezer side goes down(colder). We have to open both doors, turn it off, take out all food and wait for about 2 hours. Using hot wet both towel to warm the panel between freezer and refrigerator will accelerate the defrost process. We have to do same work every 3-6 months. Please let us know how to solve this problem.

We have a fridge that does the same thing. We simply shut it down for about an hour when we notice the fridge building up frost. By not waiting until it gets too thick we are able to get the frost down without shutting down, removing all the food, and using extra heat to defrost it. We have to do this about once a month, but it saves a huge mess. By the way, a refrigerator that is self defrosting, such as the one you have shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately the only thing to do is an expensive repair or replace the fridge.$$$$ Good Luck

Hi,

On 'standard' systems, a small timer turns off the compressor every 8 hours (in most ref's) that it runs, and turns on a heater in the freezer's evaporator coil. The timer remains in the defrost cycle for 20 minutes or so, during which a small defrost limit thermostat turns the heater off when the coil's temperature reaches a preset temperature. This temperature is 45-70 degrees F, depending on refrigerator design.
When the defrost system fails, it causes the evaporator coil to continue accumulating frost until air can't get through it to do its job of cooling (transferring heat from, actually) your groceries.

By the time you see frost in the freezer, coating the back wall in most designs, the coil will be clogged with frost, and in need of attention.

First, ensure that the freezer fan's running. Fan failure can also cause coil frost-up, so this is the first test. (Be aware that some refrigerators have a fan switch that turns this fan off when the freezer door's opened. And some new refrigerators' ADC computers switch and vary the speed of the freezer fan - these can be very tricky to diagnose).
If it's *frost* and the freezer fan's running, you have a defrost problem, usually caused by one of 3 components: timer, heater, or defrost t'stat. The good news is, if the frost is evenly coating the coil, the expensive stuff's OK - no Freon leaks or restrictions Thank you.....

    The first
thing to check is the overall internal refrigerator temperature (see
the Appliance Accessories section for a refrigerator/freezer
thermometer). The proper temperature should be between 35 and 42
    degrees.

The defrost timer is behind a cover
near the light, The timer puts the fridge in defrost ever 6 to 8 hours.
If the timer is bad it will stop the cycle of defrost and cause the
freezer and the cold food section to warm spoiling the food and
increase the freezer temp. Try turning the timer screw clockwise until
you hear the fridge compressor stop. If after this listen for a
crackling noise that will be the sound of defrost taking place. If
doing this starts defrost, you will need to replace the timer.

Temperature does not go below 59 deg. refrigerator side.

Auto Damper models, The Auto Damper model refrigerator has
two controls and both have capillary sensing.
The Auto Damper controls the fresh
food temperature and the Freezer Temperature
Control guides the freezer temperature.
The fresh food compartment temperature
is maintained by a damper assembly located
at the back of the temperature control
housing. Changes in air temperature
cause the damper door to open and close.
A control rod and gear connect the fresh
food control knob to the damper control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to the
COLDEST position increases the flow of
freezer air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a faster rate and cools at a slower
rate, increasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to a
WARMER setting decreases the flow of
chilled air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a slower rate and cools at a faster
rate, decreasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
It is ver possible that the auto damper has failed and will need to be cosidered as a likely cause. GE Monogram freezer will not stay cold enough

This sounds like you freeezer is not defrosting properly causing foods not to freeze rapidly and possibly causing the fresh food section to remain warmer than normal. I think it would be a good idea to unplug and remove the rear panel in the back of your frezzer to examine just what is going on. Hopefully the defrost element part number WR51X322 is not defective. We also will need to inspect the mother control board below your refrigerator and in-closed in a case that covers the board. All defrost is done by this board part number WR55X10560 Look for burn marks and signs of heat damage. If found the board will need replaced. You also can contact me at appliancepartsse@yahoo.com and the parts can be found at these links. Sea Breeze

Defrosting Problem

Possibly sounds like the heating element on your defroster is burnt out or the drain hole for the defroster is blocked, not allowing the defrosted water to drip underneath the fridge to evaporate, thus causing a buildup of ice. That buildup may be blocking that vent that goes bwtn the freezer and fridge. The heating element is simply checked and/or replaced by removing back panel of freezer. It's about the only thing behind that panel and likes like a row of fins. Google images for a better understanding of what you are looking at. If its a block of ice, you know there is a problem. The element is replaced by simply unplugging it and replacing with a new one. You should also see a small hole at the bottom of the freezer. Try pouring a little water in it and listen to see it its running into the plastic pan that's underneath the fridge (usually visible if you take the grill off). Some models have a hose that kinks up attached to this small hole. Had an Amana freezer that did this on several occasions and cause the whole bottom of the freezer to become a block of ice because the water had no where to go.
