I called customer service at JVC. First, they asked me to clean the unit with a disk cleaner. They had me look at the disks I was using. I was using DVD+R and DVD+RW. They told me only DVD-R or DVD-RW work. They were right. Hope this helps.

The DVD-burner inside the DVDR520H is a very cheap LiteOn-burner (model: DDW451S).
It would be better to replace the burner, but it would be difficult to find a product which will fit in the limited space.
I'm having troubles with burning DVD's since I had bought this peace of ****.
The machine have been repaired three times, but it is still not functioning properly.
Shame on Philips for assembling such a weak product and their very bad support!
I have two models to recomend, one is the Philips DVD R 357H/37 that has a hard disk for you to save TV shows and you can burn them later on CD's or DVD's, or you can burn them directly. It's around $290 and can also play any DVD or CD.
Another model is the Panasonic DMR-EZ27K that lack's of a hard disk, which makes it cheaper (around $200), but still can record CD's or DVD's directly from the TV.
Hope it helps.
