"device unknown" on every USB port

Check that the ports work OK with another device - a printer for instance. They are pretty tolerant things when it comes to connectivity. If no joy there, go into "Device Manager" (I assume we are talking about Windows) and look in "Universal Serial Bus controllers" (at the bottom of the list) and see if there are any conflicts or absence of controllers. If so you could try to get Windows to fix itself by booting up with the Windows disk in a drive and following the onscreen instructions to repair the installation.
Do you use USB for your keyboard or mouse? Do they work? Or a joystick or game controller?
If none of the above help, your motherboard is probably kaput.
You could try a PCI (or PCIe) board with additional USB ports. Not the ones that plug into the internal USB headers (if the M/B is broken they probably won't work either).
That's all I can think of without seeing the PC myself.
After that - build yourself a new PC! Good luck.

I PLUGGED MY MP3 PLAYER INTO MY LAPTOP USB PORT AND IT USED TO WORK NOW IT SAID THE USB DEVICE HAS EXCEEDED ITS POWER LIMITS OF ITS HUB PORT AND WONT WORK NOW

If you get an error message"Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB deviceinto the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive currentthat the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, youneed to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer'sUSB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

USB port gives new message "unknown device"

hello allan213

my name is ausi.

is it on all usb ports only one of them if it is in only one of them then the message you getting generaly means one of thw follwng.

1- if it is in only one of the ports then try it with a different device as well to see if it is the actual port or not.

2- the device you have plugged in needs to have drivers installed. normally should have been supplied with it.

3- the device you plugging in is faulty and the system can not access it.

4- the system usb ports are overloaded. (too many usb devices connected simultaneously)

good luck

Hellow sir, I am mahesh. I have transcend 4GB pen drive (JF V10). My problem is, When i connected pen drive to my pc then it could not start but it was shown in my computer as a removable disk and...

its just simple MAHESH...

1st if your pen drive has no data inside.. don't hesitate to reformat it.. then try again..

2nd check the device manager on your computer if the pen drive of yours was updated with its USB port.. just look for the UNKNOWN DEVICE in the USB port in the bottom of the device manager..

if there's no name of UNKNOWN DEVICE it means you must go to the settings of your pen drive..

just right click your pen drive then properties,, then look for the AUTO PLAY then select the action to perform..

then apply and ok... now close all documents then go to my computer and right click your pen drive and click the AUTO PLAY if its work... restart your pc... then its done... ^_^

I have an Asus A8N-VM and all of my usb ports quit working over this last weekend. It kept losing the connection and regaining it all day Saturday then it just quit working. Luckily my tower has PS2 ports...

this problem for that i know is caused from this :
one your controller that controlling your usb ports is finished, and with this is coming more problems not oly usb ports,
second you prompted to install something but you didn't. go to control panel system, devices and one time you are there click on your computer name in begining of the list. after that click in action and then scan for new devices, if nothing is found in the list go to universal serial bus controllers and see if is finded there no name usb or unknown usb device. if this isnt helpin you fixing problem try to install again your system but without destroing that you have to not loosing to much time, in setup window dialogue select repair but the secon that appear not first one.

Problem yet not solved i.e usb not detected on any port and without usb installed, an unknown device is indicate,

Is the USB showing yellow mark on Device Manager entries. When you connect any device to USB does it show any device??

If not, then it might be the USB chips failure on your MoBo and need to replace.

Otherwise, go to Intel support site and download all the updated drivers for your MoBo.
