Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a whirlpool toploader. The coupler broke. Idid not see this . I thought it had stripped a gear or some thing because it would not wash or spin, but the motor would turn. Iopened the gear box stripped it , cleaned it put new oil in put it back together again but still no joy. Then i saw that it had the coupler and that this was broken. I bought a new one and replaced it. Put all back to gether again and the machine washes perfectly. My problem is that when it gets to the spin cycle the motors still runs but it doesn`t spin. Did i put some of the pastics parts in the gear box back wrong. Is there perhaps a diagram available that shows how the different parts come together. I will appreciate the help. regards Donald

See the following three Whirlpool / Kenmore documents:

Pay particular attention to the "Neutral Drain Assembly" since there is a very small spring on one of the plastic parts that pushes the part into the main spin gear. If the spring is missing or broken, the washer won't spin. (we had the same problem and only found it after tearing the transmission apart the third time.)

I had just replaced coupler on my kenmore top load model 23832100 becouse it had broke during spin cycle now every thing work except spin

First, see the Sears parts list for your washer: (Always a good thing to have)

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11023832100/0582/0153200?searchedModel=23832100&blt=

Next, see the following Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for these washers:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

The first thing to check is:: Are you sure that you re-connected the Lid Switch. You have to disconnect the switch in order to pull the cabinet to get to the Motor coupler and (I've done it) you may have forgotten to re-plug the switch.

I'd also check to verify that the coupler is in place correctly.

Since very few "expensive" things go wrong with these washers, If the switch is in place, the motor coupler is fine and it fills, agitates and drains OK, the problem MAY be the "Neutral Drain Assembly" in the gearcase. It's an inexpensive but messy fix.

Those cams/gears etc. in that assembly keep the washer from spinning until all of the water is pumped out and then go into spin mode.

When ours had a similar problem, we looked at the transmission parts list (available on a number of sites) and on the Whirlpool site (Whirlpool makes Kenmore) and noticed that the one of the cams in the neutral assembly which is supposed to have a small spring, didn't on ours when we tore the transmission apart again

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

Found the part number for a kit (Whirlpool part number 388253 Neutral Assembly) for $15.00 and replaced the cams and gears.

In order to get the transmission out, you have to remove the cabinet, the fabric dispenser and both agitators. The top agitator uses a plastic 1/2" drive bolt (a 1/2" socket extension works well).

You don't have to remove the drum.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Lay the machine down (after disconnecting power and hoses, remove the pump (two clips), the motor (two screws hold two clips on the motor), lift and set the motor aside.

Remove two 1/2 inch bolts for the motor mounting plate and three 1/2 inch bolts for the transmission.

Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft), remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 15Oz of gear oil (auto parts store) , remove the clip holding the main spin gear on and check the plastic cams.

If the cam that should have a spring doesn't, or the others look damaged, or the main spin gear is damaged the washer won't go into spin mode.

If that's the problem, install a Neutral drain kit, put everything back together carefully and the problem may be solved.

As an aside, fixing ours cost less than $30 including 80-90 weight gear oil vs. $170 for a new transmission.

I have a wirlpool ultimate care washer the drivecoupler is broke how do I know the tranny is good ? or is the tranny bad and this is what broke the coupler?

most of the time coupler will be fine. but it could be broke b/c of tranny. spin by hand make sure tranny will spin freely both ways. make sure it adjitates and spins. then replace coupler start it up. the good thing is that a coupler is cheap so if it ends up being bad you didnt spend much anyways.

Sounds like a screwdriver is caught up in the gears.

Assuming that this is a basic top loader, direct drive, neutral drain washer the first thing I'd look at is the motor coupler.

This is a three part device between the motor and transmission (1 plastic piece on the transmission shaft, 1 plastic piece on the motor shaft with a rubber coupler between them designed as a fail safe.

If the coupler is broken, that could be the cause of the noise and not engaging.

Beyond that, it could likely be either the plastic or metal gears in the transmission.

Here are a couple of places to check.

Sears parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and a directory of sub-components will come up. Check the category for motor and pump for the coupler.

Whirlpool installation and maintenance manual. This appears to be a public domain PDF file with descriptions of how the washer works and transmission diagnostics.

Whirlpool parts list for a commercial washer. Basically the same as consumer models.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

Since you usually try to fix things yourself, you have nothing to lose by trying to diagnose the problem and repairing it yourself.

We had a problem with major noise and no spinning on ours and by tearing the transmission apart and replacing an agitator cam assembly (plastic) and neutral drain assembly (also plastic) we spent just $30 (including new 80-90 weight oil) instead of $170 for a new transmission.

The washer runs threw the cycles but drum wont spin

If it is a topload whirlpool or kenmore, you may need a new lidswitch or motor coupler. What do you mean you push the drum to one side?

sounds like the 2 posts are differant. harrison2008 if the coupler is broke it won't agitate.to check it you lean the machine back and look at the motor and gearcase the coupler is right between the 2.you can try turning it by hand with the machine unplugged and it may fall off.

Washer was in spin cycle, theen something broke ,lots of noise ,i think its a belt ,how can i tell?

Topload whirlpools do not have a belt. There is a 'coupler' between the motor and the gearcase that has most likely failed. The coupler consists of a plastic three pronged gear, one on the motor, the other on the gearcase with a rubber piece in between. You can check the coupler by tipping the machine back and looking at the connection between the motor and gearcase. If you require assistance in replacing this part, let me know.

Whirlpool top loader washer LSR7233EQ0 drains, but does not spin. Best troubleshooting advice?

You probably broke the coupler between the motor and transmission. However If it agitates the coupler is not broke.

When replacing direct motor coupler not enough?

Gear case part # 3360629 retails for about $170.
This dosn't happen very often.
You can find a junk whirlpool, roper, kenmore or kitchen-aid and pull the motor and gear case to save $$$$$
