I, too have an Acer Aspire One. There are only drivers to run the camera, and to use it to talk to family, you need to open Instant Messenger and create an account (free) with them. You will be talked through setup. Good luck.

The location on the hard drive that a pic will be stored will depend on the default programing of whatever software you might be using to take the pictures with. That could mean literally hundreds ( maybe thousands ) of different locations, The camera is properly loaded with working webcam DRIVER software still depends on the USER's choice of software to decide how a pic is taken. These pics that are taken can be stored in a multitude of formats with .JPG and .BMG being some of the most common picture formats. You ask a very generic question that affects ALL cameras that can be hooked up to a computer but there is NO SINGLE answer to this question as it totally lies in the discretion of the software that the END USER applies to his/her webcam/camera. In many cases an END USER can initiate changes to the programming of many softwares to force the pictures to locate in areas of the hard drive that the USER decides he/she likes. But the USER himself/herself has to initiate these actions usually in the OPTIONS part of whatever software the USER is using with the camera. That is about as generic as I can be.
