The black to switch is broken at switch-----source is from light ---no neutral can I connect a combination switch ? ----light controlled with toggle ---plug hot all the time. thanks Gary

If I understand correctly you want to replace a switch with a switch-plug combo?
A switch-plug combo requires a neutral wire on the silver screw.
The black hot wire from breaker goes to the dark-colored screw.
The black wire going to switch goes to gold-colored screw.

First you have to identify cables.
You have 2 cables that enter box. Each cable has black and white wires.
One cable probably comes from breaker box, and one cable probably goes to Load (which means your fan-light)

Separate wires for testing. Turn power ON.
Test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester lights up on Hot wire. This wire will connect to brass 'Line' screw on back of new GFCI device.
Hot is identified. Test Hot to all other wires except bare ground. Tester lights up on Neutral wire. Neutral connects to silver screw that sits across from Line screw on new GFCI device.
Other two wires inside box go to Load.
These wires connect to the two wires that stick out on back of new GFCI device.

Ground wires are connected together and connect to green screw on new device.

How many sets of wires are coming into the box?
If the box is in the middle of the circuit you will have a power-source black & white wire coming in and a power-source black & white wire going out. And in this case for the switch - there must be a black and a white wire going to a light.

Typically with a switch/outlet combination all the white wires will splice together with a white pig-tail wire to feed the neutral side of the device. The two black wires from the power-source will splice together with a black pig-tail and feed the hot-side of the device. The black wire going to the light will go on one side of the switch.

Looking at outlet/switch device from the front the large slot side of the outlet will be the neutral side and the smaller outlet slot will be the hot side. The neutral side screws will be steel colored and the hot side screws will be brass colored. The white wires will go to the neutral side steel colored screws, and the black wires will go on the hot side brass colored screws on the outlet.

The black wire comig into the box from the light is called a switchleg and goes to a brass screw on one side of the switch. The brass screw on the otherside of the switch will be for the black wire coming from the power-source.

Don't hardwire the disposal. That's against plumbing and electrical code. House will not pass inspection.

That being said.
Electricians don't guess, they test.

Note which wires were connected on same screw.
Do not untwist any wires..
Separate individual wires for testing.
Turn power ON.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire. Hot connects to Brass screw on ordinary receptacle.
Hot is identified.
Test Hot to each other wire, except bare ground.
Tester lights up on Neutral. Neutral connects to Silver screw on ordinary receptacle.

Load wire goes to disposal.
To put power to Load, then Load wire also connects to brass screw along with Hot wire.

The white wires from the two light fixtures get connected to the white wire from your power supply.
Then the black from your power supply goes to the gold colored screw on the switch. Lastly, the two black wires going to your light fixtures get twisted together with a third jumper wire. The other end of the jumper goes on the silver screw on the new switch.

You are replacing old switch-receptacle device.
New device also has switch and receptacle.
You want switch to control light, but not receptacle.
You want receptacle 'hot' all the time.

You have 2 cables that enter box.
Each cable has white, black and ground wires.
Ground wires are twisted together and attached to green ground screws and not discussed more.

Screws on new device:
Side 1 of device: New device has dark screw(s) or brass screws on one side ... these screws are connected together by brass plate. This side is the Hot side of device.

Side 2 of device: Other side has 2 separate and unconnected screws. These screws are not connected in any way. Each of the 2 disconnected screws sits opposite the switch and opposite the plug.

Cables.
One cable comes from breaker box. This cable has a Hot and Neutral wire. The Hot is black. Neutral is white.
The other cable goes to Load (light). Black supplies power to Load (light), and white connects to Neutral.
If you are uncertain which is which, testing is shown below.

Connect the device:
Side 1 of device: Black Hot goes to dark colored screw(s) that are connected by brass plate. (This is only wire connected to this side of device)
Side 2 of device: Black that goes to Load (light) connects to screw that sits opposite the switch.
Side 2 of device: White Neutral connects to screw that sits opposite the plug

One wire is left .. the white from light. This white wire connects to white Neutral wire. Since white neutral is already connected to device, look on back of device to see if there is a quick-connect hole for you to shove wire into back of device. If device doesn't have quick-connect, then twist white wires together, and add a short jumper wire to device, and then all the whites are connected to neutral. Circuit is complete.

How to test for Hot and Neutral
Separate wires.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground.
Tester lights up on hot wire.
Now test hot wire to other wires.
Tester lights up on neutral

Help with Woods 59018/59028 7 day digital timer


The usual connection for this type timer is the house black power to the timer black, the house white power to the timer white and the , the light black wire to the red timer wire.
If you only have two wires, one black and one white, at the switch location, then you cannot use this style timer , as it needs a neutral. You should return this timer and get one that does not require a neutral connection.

Chain to light does not work


Most paddle fans that come with a light kit (or provisions to add one via plug / jack later) provide at least 3 wires (most times 4 though) that will need to be connected to the house wiring. Those wires are:

1) Green, or Green with a Yellow stripe - this is the grounding wire and is connected to the grounded metal junction box or other ground wires.
2)White - this is the neutral wire and is connected to both the fan motor and light fixture.
3)Black - this wire connects to the fan motor. This wire along with the white wire completes a circuit for the fan.
4)Blue - this wire connects to the light fixture. This wire along with the white wire complete a circuit for the light fixture.

Ideally, the junction box in the ceiling has a neutral, ground and both an unswitched power source *and* a switched power source. An unswitched source is always on (regardless of any switch's position) while the switched source is controlled by one or more switch(es) near a door(s). Use a meter or tester to determine which wires are switched (probably black or red) and unswitched (probably black but may be red, too). Label them or orient them in such a way that you'll remember which is which. Turn the power off.

Connect the paddle fan's blue wire to the switched wire, the black wire to the unswitched wire(s), the white wire to the other neutral (most likely white wire(s) and finally, the ground wire to the rest of the ground wire(s). Turn power back on.

Wiring in this way allows the light fixture to be controlled by the wall switch(es) and the fan by the pull chain on the fixture. Turn the wall switch on and pull the chain until the light turns on. You can remove the long chain once the switch turns the light on and off so it is not accidentally shut off at the paddle fan later. Change the fan speed from high to low and eventually off with the chain.

If you only have a switched or unswitched power source in the ceiling, you'll have to connect both the black and blue paddle fan wires to whichever type power you have in the ceiling (switched or unswitched). If you're using a switched sourced, that switch will have to be left on in order for the fan or light to work.

If you have wired in any of these methods already, it could be that the switch for the fixture has failed, and should be replaced with a like-type switch.

First, turn off the power to this circuit to avoid getting a shock.

If the two devices that are controlled by the combination switch are lights, you will want to join the two (2) white (neutral) wires together with a wire nut, as these are not connected to the switch.

You also want to connect the bare copper wires (ground) together and connect one of them to the switch's green grounding screw and IF the wall box is metal, you also need to attach the ground wire to the box with a green grounding screw.

Now, you can connect the wires that go to your lights, the red and black wires that are part of the same wire and are routed to the same location thru the wall box. Take either the black or red and connect them to the screws on the side of switch that are not connected together with the small brass strip between them. Put the red on one of these screws and the black on the other.

Now with the black wire that is the hot (Common), this is the one that is bringing power into the wall box, should be connected to the other side of the switch, the one with the two (2) screws that are joined together with the brass strip between them.

This will allow you to turn on and off each of the lights (or a fan, etc) separately with each switch sharing the common power source.

Here's a picture of the switch that shows the side of the switch with the common side and the brass strip that connects the screws together. This is the side where the one black (hot / common) wire that supplies the power gets connected.

Wiring a leviton 5625-W switch receptacle combination


You cannot replace the switch with a switch/receptacle combo because there is no neutral wire. The black and white that you see are both used as hot wires. One is the Line and the other is the Load.

You have to install another 2 wire cable or replace the existing with a 3-wire cable. A 3-wire cable has a black, red, and white, plus the bare ground wire
