The MP640 uses the PGI520 and CLI521 cartridges.
When you lift the top and the carrage moves to the middle all full cartridges should be lit up. If the light is off on any/all cartridges it means they are empty. If the light is flashing it means it is running low.
Each cartridge has a clip on the back of the cartridge. Push this clip towards the cartridge and it releases the cartridge for replacement.
I would try opening the printer, make sure the ink cartridge is fully seated. Once that is checked, unplug the printer, wait a minute or so, then plug the printer back in and try to turn it on. If the problem persists, then try a new ink cartridge. If that doesn't work, there is something major wrong with the printer itself, and will be beyond anyone but a Canon repair facility to repair.
my canno mp640 will not print in black, have replaced the 521/520 carterages new also a new printhead, and stiil it will not print, yet it prints colors ok. can you help please DD.
Quite common. This printer is quite sensitive to "refills" and they should not be used. I would recommend going back and returning what you purchased in favor of geniune cartridges. At minimum, use a "remanufactured" cartridge from a reputable dealer. Where they will reset the chips properly on the cartridge.
Hey Neville! That happens! The best would be to take it back to where u bought the cartridge and ask for a new one,but it is not recommended to use generic ink has this clocks up the printhead and damages the purge unit too!All The best!!
