Best Buy installed Trend Micro onto my laptop computer. I had to do a system restore on the computer, so it wiped out all of my programs. I tried to install Trend Micro, and it says I need a password. Is there a general password that they use for that program?

Generally, when you purchase a new system, it will either come with a full version of a program(for which you should have registration/authentication info in your computer documentation), or a demo version(Usually a time-limited free trial.)
If your username/password for the Trend Micro application aren't listed anywhere in your paperwork, you will need to contact Best Buy/Geek Squad support by phone, or take the system in to the store where you purchased the system.

Assuming that the version of Trend Micro that was pre-installed was the free trial version, you may be better off now and in the long-term by installing a free antivirus program that won't expire.
I usually recommend Avast as a solution for anyone who doesn't need or want to invest in higher performance antivirus and Internet security.
However, if you really want to get that Trend Micro installation back, if you have a CD/DVD for restoring your netbook back to the factory installation, you should be able to use that to revert your netbook to that fresh state (with Trend Micro installed).

You may have got a virus on your computer that has disabled the virus program. Trend Micro is a good program and I use it but no virus scanner is 100% safe even if you keep it updated often. You may have installed a program that has disabled it. First shut off windows restore in the control panel. Then re-boot the computer and press F5 when the computer is booting up and this will bring up a menu. Then boot windows into safe mode with networking. Then see if Trend will update virus files and run a complete scan. If it can't the go to www.trendmicro.com and use their housecall program to do a complete virus scan on the computer. If no virus is found then you will need to try to find the program that caused Trend to stop working and remove it. Do you have more than one virus scanner installed like spysweeper. If you do then you will need to un-install that program. Then reboot computer and try to re-install trend.
1. make sure that the previous installation is inactive 2. since this is a new computer, upgrade to the Trend Micro Internet Security 2009 version. use the same serial number and remember to create a NEW account when prompted.

This is a reference to PC-Cillin / Trend Micro ("TM"). Are you running Trend Micro PC-Cillin on your computer. Are you using more than one anti-virus program? You should only use one as they will conflict with each other.
Try getting in through Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key while the pc is rebooting. Once in uninstall and reinstall your anti virus program.
I had a similar problem and this worked for me
with Trend Micros Internet Security.
You will have to uninstall the program first then reinstall it, otherwise it
will hang and cause problems with your computer.
In order to uninstall it do these steps.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuation.
Makes sure you select Selective Startup, and that Load Startup Items is unchecked.
Click OK, and you should be prompted to reboot.
After you reboot and the system is loaded your Virus Software icon will NOT
be in the taskbar trying to load.
Now go into control panel > Programs and Features.
Find the virus program, hightlight and select the uninstall option.
After its done doing that go back into the Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > System Configuration. Select Normal Startup
and hit the OK button.
Reboot again when you see the button prompt.
Now, after the system comes up, reinstall your virus software,
You should be good to go from there.
The process is for Vista, but if your running Windows XP it is very similar.
