The TV died 18 months after purchase. I did not buy extended warranty. The technician tried swapping the motherboard but that did not fix the problem. Now the tech believes the LCD itself could be the issue. Does anyone have any advice here
I heard a pop and immediately the picture died, I still get sound. I have not tried any fix I am trying to figure out what went wrong.
HI there, If the screen is blank but you have sound it is not really likely to be the motherboard. Q1 is the lamp on? Look into the air vents around the top of the panel, look for any light and heat. If there is no light but some heat, point a torch at the front of the panel, in the light can you see any movement with the TV ON!!

You know this is pretty damn strange everyone is having this problem with this Plasma TV right around the same time... When I purchased mine it stated that it had 20,000 hours of life to it... Also, I purchased the extended warranty plan for and the company that supplied the warranty went out of business so now, I have a bad TV and was screwed out of more money buying the extended warranty
The Service Plan from Walmart is an "extended plan" on top of the manufacture warranty. Your Tv is still under warranty from the manufacture.
Here's a link to get the info you need to get started on a warranty claim: http://www.vizio.com/support.aspx?id=1588
Do this test and it should tell if the lcd panel is bad or not, turn the tv on and touch the screen in the center, push with your finger firmly but not to hard, if you have a backlight or light shows up around your finger then it is probably the T-con board/panel, the T-con board is attached to the lcd panel and is less expensive to replace, if you do not have any light then it's probaly the power supply
Are you from US or Canada? I'm Panasonic authorized and allways Pana covered the warranty after 1 month from the expire date. Call Panasonic Viera service and tell them the story. I'm sure you'll get refound.
Anyway, a horizontal line doesn't mean the PDP is defective. It's one scan IC burned on the SU or SD board (depend where the line is). We allways replaced the SC bord each time SU or SD got burned. If after SD and SC replacement it still defective...yes the PDP has one scan line in short.
Call Viera and insist to get warranty. Let me know. Good luck!
Technician just replaced the upper right (from the back) circuit board that conects to the panel. TV now works fine. I bought the display model 8 months ago with extended Circuit City Warranty for $1000 so I can't complain. This was covered entirly by LG/Zenith (nicest Cust. Svc. ever) so we'll wait and see what happens.
Under menu, option make sure that you haven't selected audion only and that input select is on the first or second options,(not the third one). If you can't even see the menu, then your connections are probably bad.
Hope this helps,
