Question about Sony VAIO VGN-AR630E Notebook

1 Answer

I have a vaio laptop vgn-ar630e When starting up get message drive failure predicted back up file and replace drive. This is the 2cd drive that has been installed by "expert repair people" and neither has lasted a year. Have been running in safe mode with networking for 8 months. all diagnostics I know to do say everthing is working properly. startup normal gets to desktop ok then click any program and cursor goes in circles forever and never opens program.

I meant the second time the hard drive has failed and been replaced,,sorry for the misunderstanding.

My concern is why are the hard drives failing?

I think it is a heat issue defect from the start.

This laptop is far from being over used or abused and it is getting expensive to spend over 300 bucks once a year for a new hard drive.

I have no files I would consider important. All I use it for is e-mail and access to internet.

I realize now I spent way too much money for a bunch of stuff I thought I would use but never did.

You should not have to replace the hard drive every year so what is wrong with this thing?

Again I never had problems with the c/d drive it is the hard drive,it tells you that in the error message:replace hard drive-.

Please give some diagnostic things to verifiy it is indeed a drive problem before I put in another one.

Perhaps it should read: "replace hard drive it's a Sony"

Guy you are taking it wrong or i might say understanding it wrong . Your computer is not refering to cd disk drive but HARD DISK DRIVE and suggesting you to back up your data before ultimate failure of your hard disk.
Please read the message again and then your brain will light up as now i have explained you the diff between drive and drive.
Just kidding , don't mind it.
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) is a hard drive pre-warning system, usually installed in system BIOS to check and report hard drive defects before they could result in ultimate failure. SMART analyzes the hard drive based on same reliability factors and warn users against predictable failures. These failures could occur due to gradual wear and tear, overheating, increased noise level, excessive bad sectors and other similar factors.
Thus, the user or system administrator gets enough time to take preventive measures like backing up the data or replacing the hard drive. If you are getting errors of such type, it is suggested that you should immediately backup all the data stored on the hard drive and replace it. However, if the hard drive is completely failed and you haven't taken any preventive step, you can seek Hard Drive Recovery expert's help to recover data from such physically crashed drive.

For an instance, you might receive the following error when trying to start a computer:

WARNING: Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. SMART failure predicted on primary slave.

You might encounter such errors each time while starting the system. Such errors are signs of anticipating hard drive failure and thus requires user's attention. You need to follow these steps after you encounter this error message:

Backup all the stored data on a secondary storage media such as CDs or DVDs
Replace the failing hard drive as soon as possible

If you continuously ignore this error message and reach at the final stage of hard drive failure, consult a data recovery company. Hard Drive Data Recovery is provided through procedural techniques and advanced recovery tool.

Now i believe the whole picture is absolutely clear ie:-
why the problem was not rectified after (cd)drive replacement and reason for you to go to safe mode since 8 months.

This time don't replace your cd drive but replace hard disk drive.
Don't mind it again just trying to add some humour in this tensed situation.

Also like to mention that your previous cd drive would be still functional because there was no problem in it and this is also another area for you to look at .

(Always waiting for responce and feedback)

Could be (not in any order), PSU, drive mounting, cables, static, Motherboard

If they are fail after months or use, my top of the list would be
either the PSU or static damage during installation
As far as i know it depends from company to company . In apple such type of cases have been found of a Motherboard replacement.
So i suggest you this time have a complete diagnostics of above things or this will happen again.

refering to your ladt line your pc is refering to hard disk only because this is an error of hard disk failure and you can google it to see if you dont believe me.,moreover backing up is required if it is a predicted hard disk failure.

Hi, your hard drive shouldn't fail that frequent at all, should last a good few years depending on usage, if your constantly downloading all day and its constantly writing to the disc 24/7 it should still last over a year or so. what you could do is try replacing the Sata cable (data cable) also try using another sata power cable, A costumer had a problem like this before but with IDE the disc wouldnt boot, couldnt find OS on the disc and kept making funny noises and freezing, turned out to be a faulty IDE cable.

Sounds like a jack issue. You may need to send the laptop in for service if you cannot replace the power jack yourself.

So, my laptop - (Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E) has crashed twice before... I just found the Repair Disks, but I'm not quite sure what to do. I put the first disk in, and it loads up to a screen SMART Failure...

Have you ever heard of TDL4 malware? It actually writes a new partition with oddball parameters such that most antivirus and anti-malware products cannot find the infection. But often the new partition overlaps previous partitions, making the internal "not-so-SMART" routines suspect that the hard drive is failing. It usually is not true! But there are only a scant few utilities that even detect TDL4, or any of it's variations. Good Luck!

Disk boot failure. Need to know how to continue when technical jargon comes on. Have no system disc

Disk boot failure means the operating system has files either missing or corrupt and without a system disk you cannot recover easily. I suggest you speak to a dealer for advice and get a system recovery disk sorted out.
Hope that helps a bit.

I lost my recovery disc for sony vaio vgn-fe38gp and would like to know how to get a replacement as am out of warranty

You can buy one online, just google recovery disc.
You may get one from a file sharing site (limewire/isohunt) but this can be risky, you never know if the file you download has been altered.
Also some info here from sony

If you have a windows disc that came with the system, insert the disc while the computer is on. Shut the computer down. Turn computer back on. Your computer should boot to the disc. Delete partitions. Format the hard drive. And reinstall.
If you do not have a windows disc contact sony to purchase a recovery disc.
