My washer seems to just agitate forever. The knob is not wanting to advance. That's the main problem.

The knob not advancing I assume is the timer where you pick the cycle you want. This would be called a mechanical type timer which is turned by a small clock type motor inside. It looks like that drive motor is defective and is usually part of the complete timer assembly You need to replace the timer assembly.

Instructions for installing timer part number 8541110 for Kenmore elite wash machine.....

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Then see the following for how to release the console for access to the timer.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=5216f244d51176ce1069bbf148b14335

Then see the following Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers. It has troubleshooting and testing procedures as well as a description of the TWO types of timers. Each has different procedures for replacing them.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

If yours is the metal type, the procedures call for unscrewing the timer knob before it can re removed.

You may need to use a thin needle nose pliers to hold the shaft on the back side of the timer in order to unscrew the knob.

I've found the timer the part number is AP57236 but you have to call www.appliancepartspros.com 1-877-477-7278 It requires special attention. The timer knob is part number AP3099107 and cost $20.28 If anyone can help find the parts you need these people are great to work with and their price and shipping charges are very reasonable. I hope you find the answer that you're looking for.

It sounds like the only thing you are missing is the circlip to hold the whole lot together.
With it de assembled you should see a cut out part on the timer stem that's where the circlip goes when it's all back together

Ge timer on washer is broken

If it no longer clicks, the timer assembly will need to be replaced. If just the knob broke off, the timer should be good.
