The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My Hitatchi 250GB External Harddrive is not working at all when plugged in to any computer I own/use It makes soft beeping sounds for several minutes and then becomes silent The lights are on, showing

take the hard drive to a computer repair shop but from your description , it may be dead
if it is a disc type hard drive , then continually moving it around is not good for the delicate workings
if it is dead , replace it with a solid state hard drive which has no moving parts and is a lot more robust

Uninstall the WD drivers, then, leaving the WD drives attached to the computer, reboot the computer.

Here is something else to try: Driver Booster by Iobit.

And take a look at the software for your drives at the Western Digital site.

Why does it continously beep? Why is it starting up by itself? Even after turning off? When you open the door it shows a light on rinse, when it was set on normal.

Not sure if your dishwasher problem has been fixed yet.

The continous beep and the rinse light on means the flood switch in your single drawer built in dishwasher has come on.

There is water leak inside the housing under the drawer. Turn the power off at the mains breaker and pull the drawer out as much as possible. Get a few towels and dry out the bottom of the dishwasher under the drawer. Use hair dryer if well.
Turn the power back on and see if the problem disappears. Sometime too much foam in detergent can also cause it but mostly it can be due to drain hose been kinked or gasket leaking.

Post a comment to let me know what you find.

When starting up the computer, I get 5 short beeps then continous

These beeps seem to show that your system did not detect any RAM (memory) modules connected to it. Please check.

  1. Open the CPU case (turn the PC off first)
  2. Remove the RAMs from the slot.
  3. Turn ON your computer without the RAMs installed. Then observe if it gives the same beeps. If it is the same, then the RAMs might fail to register.
  4. Try to plug in carefully the RAMs in place. If you have 2 RAM modules, try to test 1 RAM at a time to see if the combination of the 2 mess up your system.

Beeps continously and has orange color

The beeps you hear are BIOS Beep Codes. Sort of a 'Morse Code', if you will. So many short beeps, or so may long beeps, or a combination of short, and long beeps, making up a code.

This is the computers way of telling you something is wrong, and an area to start looking in to find the problem.

BIOS = Basic Input/Output System. A small, (Usually 64MB in size) program that is on the BIOS chip. (Chip is a slang term for Integrated Circuit. The BIOS 'chip' is soldered to your motherboard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS )

How to read that BIOS Beep Code? This becomes a little more difficult, as there are two main BIOS program makers, and every series of computers may have a different version of that program. (Award and AMI. Award and Phoenix merged)

HOWEVER, listen carefully to those beeps. Listen for a continuous series of beeps, then a pause, then the series of beeps again.
Compare what you hear to this chart,

http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml

A common problem is that ram memory stick/s may have become loose, or the ram stick is defective. (Ram 'stick' is slang for ram module)
Try re-seating your ram stick, or sticks if you have more than one.

The orange light means your harddrive isn't active. That lamp, (light), that you see is the Harddrive Activity Lamp. Red means it's working, (Active), Orange means it isn't.
If you have a ram memory problem, (Ram stick/s), your computer isn't going to work, which means the harddrive won't be working.

Getting power but wont boot up or anything

pull out everything in the computer except what's required to boot...so any pci cards or video cards (if you have onboard video). you can also try pulling out the ram (while unpowered AND unplugged) and then booting to hear beeps...if you pull the ram out and the computer doesnt make a sound, its probably a bad motherboard and needs to be replaced. if you hear beeps, try replacing the ram or disconnecting other parts...like harddrives, optical drives, modems and what not.
