Question about Operating Systems

Duel boot system first xp then vista

Hi! Sandrew

Hope you can get a solution to this, I don't know if you had something like this before. I have searched the web over & over and can not find a solution.
Some background:
I installed xp on a 30gig Ide hhd (C:) then vist ultimate on 80gig Ide hhd (F:) (ran it as duel boot system - worked very well), used a 120gig Sata hhd (D:) for backup date & 250gig sata hhd (E:) for music files.
Found Ide hhd for vista tooooo slow. Using norton ghost 14 made backups of both os & saved the backups on 250gig hhd.
Then restored the ghost image of vista to the 120gig sata drive (after coping all the data to dvd discs and formatting the hhd and removed the drive letter in comp management / disk management (In both os) and the hhd appeared to be hidden before the restoration)
Restart & would go back to the 80gig hhd for vista os, so I unpluged the 80gig hhd and restart...XP boots just fine but vista gave me error and asked for repair with vista cd & restart. Ran the repair to the boot setup and the got vista to boot, up to welcome screen - enter the password and the screen turns blue (But not the regular BLUE SCREEN) and massage apears "prepairing desktop". On Ctrl, Alt, Del I select to run task manager ( to set Shell=Explore.exe in the registry as some sugested) but nothing apears but the blue screen even if I run the task manager.
Booted from vista disc again ran repair my computer with nothing but the same blue screen.
So not a pain I said I'll plug in the 80 gig hhd, unplug the 120gig hhd and the system will run like before, booting sould not be a problem because I now had 2 hhd's with the same drive letter, but must just plug or unplug one at a time before restart.
To my suprise I could now find the same blue screen on the 80gig hhd(Vista version) (I never changed any thing on this drive except unplug it) so I think the problem is in xp or in the boot setup.
By the way in xp I can still see the 120gig hhd in disc management but not in my computer and now suddenly the 250 gig hhd can not be found at all, although I found it in ghost but it is unavailable. Problem is that the ghost images to restore is on that hhd!
Have not looked @ Bios yet, but do you think thats the route to go? and is there a way to see hidden hhd's
Can do a clean installation of vista but its painstaking to install all the app's again and, and, and....all the e-mail date etc. is still in there
Questions?
1. Is there any hope of fixing vista and xp for that matter at all?
2. If I do Vista fresh will I be able to restore files and settings using ghost 14? (By the way ghost 14 is trail version and does not give me option to coppy disk)

Hope you can help me?

Thanx for atleast listing to my song!

Your input will be appreciated

Blessings

Hi there to all.

I managed to fix the problem......

Here's how :
1. Restored my computer To the 120gig drive using ghost 14 - Restart
2. When I got prompted to run the vista disk for a repair I did it - Restart
3. Then using Easy BCD from Neosmart technologies edited the boot loader - Restart

And BOB is your uncle! It worked

The 80gig hhd has no letter assighned to it but that is easy to fix

Tanx for all you that tried to help me, you are my HERO's

Kind regards

Wow....

First I would check the BIOS settings. Make sure that the slave and master jumpers are correct on the drives.

Wouldn't it be easier to make one drive Windows XP on one drive while running Vista on the other?

It would make things easier to troubleshoot.

Can windows XP be install on HP Pavilion dv7-1132nr with Vista OS

Yes, You can dual boot Windows XP and Vista but you'll be having problem finding drivers if you install Windows XP on this computer since Windows XP supported drivers aren't available on Hp download page. HP has only Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers for this System.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Hi,

Even if you manage to install Windows XP, you will not find the drivers for sound/video because this operating system is not preferred by the manufacturer.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

boot into xp...from the RUN command type msconfig...select the BOOT tab. Remove any statements that point to Vista being on the C:\....Also, make sure the the entries for XP point to the right location.

Xp & vista toghether

You will need to partition your hard drive into two bootable partitions. Install Vista on one partition and XP on the other. This will make your system a dual boot system. Hope this helps.

Dual booting in my system one window xp and another window vista C:drive in xp D: in vista than I formated D: drive than also first time starting two option xp or vista than I want vista's option remove...

Boot to Vista. Then
  • right-click "my computer", then "properties".
  • click the "Advanced" section (Vista: on the left side bar).
  • In the section that says "Startup and Recovery", click "settings".
  • Under "Default operating system", choose "Windows Vista".
  • REMOVE the checks next to "Time to display list of..." and "Time to display recovery options..."
  • click ok to everything.
Now you will need to remove Windows XP.
IMPORTANT: for the next step make sure you boot to Windows Vista. Otherwise you could corrupt your computer.
  • Go to "Start", "Control Panel"
  • Open "Administrative Tools"
  • next, open "Computer Management".
  • On the left, there's a side bar. Under "Storage", click "Disk Management".

You're probably not going to find one. Vista lets you run old programs in 'compatibility mode' - actually, so does Windows XP. TSometimes it works, some times not but it's worth a try.

To use, you have to...
  1. right-click on the games' shortcut (either located on your desktop as an icon, or in Start -> All Programs).
  2. Once you right-click on the shortcut, click 'Properties'
  3. click on the 'Compatibility' tab at the top
  4. under the 'Compatibility mode' section, check the box that says 'Run this program in the compatibility mode for:'
  5. then choose 'windows 98' from the dropdown menu
  6. click ok when done
Good luck and I hope this helps! : )

Install window xp over vista ultimate

CHECK WITH YOUR SYSTEM MANUFACTURER WHETHER OR NOT YOUR WARRANTY IS VOIDED IF YOU INSTALL AND DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS XP. MANY OF THE NEWER SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED AND CONFIGURED TO ONLY RUN WINDOWS VISTA. HARDWARE ON YOUR SYSTEM MAY NOT BE DESIGNED TO RUN WINDOWS XP.
