printing a blank page looks smudged also.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2008

Light film of ink on page, and shadow of picture at top of page appears further down page

  • Gonzilla161 Sep 05, 2008

I have basically the same problem. I ran the "clen roller" function, but the problem persists. I get a 'ghost' of the top image on the page somewhere in the middle of the page. And horizontal stains down the length of the page as if done by a roller.

Is this as simple as changing the cartridge? Or is it a more serious problem? Where can I get help with this issue since my copier is several years old?

Please help. I have had this printer for several years without a single problem and have completely satisfied with its performance up until now.

    Thanks!

HP 9050 with smeared or Ghosted print on the leading edge

Your printer might have dust on the hexagonal mirror and other optical components inside the LSU (Laser System Unit). If the printer it's dirty inside, all that dust flows and lay down on components. In course of time, it reaches the optical components and generates a "gradient wiped out" image from left to right as you are looking at the printed page. This problem is common on laser printers. On colour printers, you may find that only one or more colors have this gradient wiped out. Because they have separate Laser System Units.

Vertical Ink smudge or smear

The problem is with the printer head which is normal in Laser Printers. Try cleaning the printer head with a cotton cloth and it'll resolve the problem a very large extent.

Printer has two smudges in same place every time

The reason you see a smudge in the exact same place everytime is due to ink being on the roller. Solution: using good light, use isoprel alchol on a cotton swab to clean the roller. Ink on the roller is also an indication that your head cleaner pad (look really good on the right hand side <inside> for the pad) is dirty. If you've not done so in the past, just flip it over and like magic you have a clean pad...just dirty on the other side.

What colour are the smudges, if they are one colour you can try changing that colour toner cartridges. Failing this then it sounds as if you may need a new drum

Smeared lines

Okay, this was the problem I posted a few days ago. It's fixed now, so in case you have the same problem with smearing, here's what the help desk from Canon suggested: Open the cover and remove the ink cartridges. There is a gray lever in front of the cartridges. Lift this lever and the printhead can be easily removed.
Our printhead had a buildup of black ink on the surface. I carefully removed this with rubbing alcohol. I let the printhead dry and replaced everything. No more smearing. Imagine a help-desk that actually helped!
