Moving QBB data

I have QuickBooks Basic 2003 on my desktop with an OS of Windows 98. I want to move all that data to my laptop which runs on Windows XP. I have recently installed QuickBooks EasyStart 2008 on that laptop. I have also purchased a USB external floppy disk drive, a product of RetailPlus, if that matters. I have been able to download that data onto formatted floppys. However, I can't get past that point. Thank you so very much in advance.

This is daughterofke here, Please "FixYa" people, walk me through each and every step to solve my situation! I am a complete NOVICE and I've tried reading up on Windows 98, Windows XP, QuickBooks Basic 2003, QuickBooks EasyStart 2008 and all the Help Centres that are available. I just can't seem to put it all together and transfer the QBB 2003 that I have on formatted 31/2 floppys. I purchased the USB external disk drive in order to transfer that QBB 2003 business data onto my laptop with OS Windows XP service pack 2 and I've already installed the QuickBooks EasyStart 2008 on that laptop as well. At this point I am so frustrated and upset with myself, I can't tell you!! Please help me with my dilema. I can't get past that point because I don't know enough about any one thing. Thank you in advance. Recap: My desktop -OS Windows 98 with the software QuickBooks Basic 2003 (with this data downloaded onto 3 1/2 floppy disks 1 through 5). My laptop -OS Windows XP 2008 w/ Service Pack 2 has QuickBooks EasyStart 2008 installed on it . The USB external floppy disk drive was purchased to transfer the QBB data onto the laptop which handles CD's and DVD's only. Thank you so very much

Hi FixYa People, As a NOVICE I must say first off that any help is greatly appreciated and I will need everything spelled out step by step. I have a desktop with Windows 98 and the software is QuickBooks Basic 2003. My laptop has Windows XP-Service Pack 2 and I just installed QuickBooks EasyStart 2008. Upon a recommendation, I purchased a USB external floppy disk drive with the hopes that the QBB data I saved on 5 floppy disks( which were new but,I formatted to be on the safe side)could be downloaded onto my laptop. That is as far as my "vast" knowledge has gotten me and I would be very greatful for the guidance in achieving this goal and to learn something new at the same time. Thank you in advance.

To convert a QuickBooks company data file:

  1. Open the newer version of QuickBooks, and open your company file:
    • If you see a Welcome to QuickBooks window, select Open an existing QuickBooks company, and then click OK.
    • If one of the sample files opens, choose Open Company from the File menu.
    • If you see a No Company Open window, click the Open an existing company button at the bottom of the window.
Note: If you are restoring a backup, begin the restore normally. Skip to step 3 and proceed with the rest of the conversion steps provided.
  1. Find the existing data file in the Open a Company window and click Open. You may need to navigate through the Look In drop-down list to find your file. The file name should look something like: [Company Name].QBW.
Note: If you installed the newer version of QuickBooks over the earlier version, the company data file may try to open automatically. In this case, you will see the window noted in step 3, and will not need to open the company data file separately. Also, once your data from the previous year's edition of QuickBooks has been updated to the newer version, you will not be able to open the file in the older version of QuickBooks.
  2. An Update File to New Version window will open, containing a message that begins: Your data file needs to be updated to work with this version of QuickBooks... Please read the entire message carefully before typing yes in the space provided.
  3. Click OK twice to begin the backup process.
  4. Verify the Filename and Location in the bottom half of the window, and then click Back Up.
  5. You may receive one or more messages. Read each one carefully before clicking Yes.
  6. When QuickBooks has finished converting the data, the hourglass will disappear and the name of the data file will display in the upper left corner of your screen.
If this doesn't work let me know and I will assist you further,
Lee

I can tell you categorically, that there are no step by step instructions on this, mostly due to the file issues going from 98 to XP..if this were 2000 to XP or 98 to 2000, not a big deal. But, the only way to really do this, is to export all the data, from 98 version.

Install the xp version on your new machine.

And then , file by file, import, with filters, the data, and hope and cross your fingers that it comes through cleanly.

The first thing you'll need to do is look at your external drive and see if you any files that the extension .qbb for QuickBooks Backup Fle or .qbw for QuickBooks Company file. The QBW files can be opened up directly into the new version you already have installed. The .qbb files can be restored by going to the File menu in QuickBooks and choosing Open Restore Company.

If you do not have any files of this type on that drive, then unfortunately your data is not on that external drive at all and you would need to look for any other backups that may have been made to cds or other external media.

You cannot just open a QuickBooks backup file if that is what you are trying to do. You need to start QuickBooks then use the restore option to convert the backup file to a regular QuickBooks file. Backup files do not need to be used unless you lose your regular file. Regular files have a .qbw extension. .qbb files are backup files. Do not click on those .qbb files.

After updating the program, the server computer does not allow access to programs. Error messages come up -6150 and-1006. the file directory list every file 3 times, with no access from file directory...

Looks like it can be caused by:
QuickBooks cannot read the company file because the QuickBooks file extension was changed or is the wrong type (.qbm, .qbb, .qbx).

This error can also occur during conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file if QuickBooks detects data damage in the company file.

This error may possibly occur if the QuickBooks installation is damaged.

This error can also be caused by attempting to open the portable company file (.qbm) without having QuickBooks open.

You can convert the file to a .qbw which is a quickbooks working file

Print the RDS Guide to use as a reference while installing and configuring the RDS utilities. This guide includes screenshots of the process.
On the computer where QuickBooks and the QuickBooks data file resides, download the RDS Server Installer, saving it on your Windows desktop.
On the computer where Point of Sale is installed, download the RDS Client Installer, saving it on your Windows desktop.

Hello There, I found this in their FAQ Guide. Hope this resolves your problems, I know it is a bit of a read. Good Luck!!

    What is happening?

Double-clicking on a backup, portable company file, or a file with an extension other than .qbw, the following error occurs:
An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open, or use the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6150,-1006).
Or, if you attempt to double-click the data file without QuickBooks open, the following error occurs:
There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run QuickBooks with company file "path location". Error code 80070057.
Note: More than one error message that includes the error code 80070057 exists. If this is not the exact wording of your error message please refer to one of these other documents:
Error: 80070057 parameter is incorrect" when clicking on a QBB, QBM, QBW, NT, or TLG file from a Google Search Timeline
Error: 80070057 parameter is incorrect" when clicking on a QBB, QBM, NT, or TLG file from a Google Search Timeline
Error: 80070057, the parameter is incorrect. There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run QuickBooks with company file [path and name]
Error: 80070057 the parameter is incorrect" and "You do not have sufficient permissions to delete files...
If your Error 80070057 is different than the ones displayed, perform a new Search.

    Why is this happening:
QuickBooks cannot read the company file because the QuickBooks file extension was changed or is the wrong type (.qbm, .qbb, .qbx).
This error can also occur during conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file if QuickBooks detects data damage in the company file.
This error may possibly occur if the QuickBooks installation is damaged.
This error can also be caused by attempting to open the portable company file (.qbm) without having QuickBooks open.

    How to fix the problem:
Verify that the file extension displays company name.qbw and not a shortcut.
Copy the company file, change the extension to .qbm, .qbb, or .qbx, and follow the appropriate steps to open a portable file, backup, or accountant's review.
If the error occurs during the conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file, run the Verify utility to check the file for data damage. If it finds damage, run the Rebuild utility.
    Repair the QuickBooks installation.
    Uninstall, and then reinstall QuickBooks.

    Updating Quickbooks on Vista OS

There are a couple of things going on here.
First, and most important, Qb 2005 was not designed to run on Vista. Vista was barley even in the planning stages when 2005 was programmed. Vista will probably run it, but in a compatability mode ( pretending to be an older version of Windows), but updating the program will be nightmarish at best because the updates are pointing to files that are either 1) no longer used by Windows or 2) the versions and functionality of the files has changed.
My best advice- restore the backup on an XP box, or get a later version of QuickBooks that will run on Vista.

Is quick books 2003 Vista compatabile?

QuickBooks Pro 2003 can run on Windows Vista. Right-click a shortcut to open Quickbooks (or qbw32.exe directly) and click on Properties. Select the Compatibility tab. Under Compatibility Mode, check the box and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the list. Under privilege level, select "Run this program as an administrator." Select OK and everything will work.
