Whirlpool washer agitator not working

You most likely need to replace the dogs in the agitator, two piece agitator design. It should spin one way and catch the other on the teeth of the dogs. It will spin freely either way when the dogs are wore out. This is for the top half of the agitator, bottom is fitted to transmission shaft. You pop the top cover, remove the 7/16 bolt and both halves together to change dogs of agitator. Pull halves apart to change dogs. Fairly simple.

+whirlpool LSQ8243HQ0 water valve works. wont wash or spin. new motor coupling and timer.

Under the agitator you have what is called (agitating dogs). The agitator will have to be removed. The top should spin off, you will be able to look down into the agitator and see a bolt. Remove this bolt and the agitator can be pulled out. The agitators are small pieces of plastic with small teeth. These teeth get worn out over time or if the washer is overloaded. When the agitator free spins one way the teeth grab a (gear) on agitator and this is how you get the washing action (agitating). These dogs are easy to replace and cost about $5. I have a GE washer model # WHDRR418GWW. It is about 19 months old. It stopped agitating and spinning. It will fill with water and the timer/knob will go thru the cycles. But when it reaches the washing...

You have what is called "agitating dogs" there are usually 4 of them at the bottom of the agitator. They have small grippers which lock onto the agitator and agitates. If the washer is ever overfilled or over time filled to heavy this will wear down the nylon teeth on the "dogs". The top of the agitator will spin off, you will see a bolt inside at the bottom, remove bolt and the agitator will pull out. Google "agitating dogs on washer. It will give you pictures for a better understanding. If the belt was broken the washer would not drain, because the belt turns the pump. These dogs are about $5 and honestly easy to install. Good Luck.

I have an older Kenmore top loading washer model 11082994100. The machine is in excellent condition and I replaced the main control board a couple of years back. Issue is lately when machine goes to end of...

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11082994100/0582/0153200?pathTaken=

and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

See the following Whirlpool Service manuals for top load, direct drive washers. They describe what happens in the transmission when the washer goes into spin mode:

Also see the Whirlpool Parts list for their Commercial washers, although the consumer models use the same transmission.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

Basically whats happening is this.

When the washer goes into spin mode two plastic cams are forced together and raise a gear on the main agitator shaft that is supposed to keep the agitators from spinning. If the cams are worn (not necessarily broken) the gear doesn't lift high enough to completely disengage the agitators. We had the same problem. Ours was a major gear noise but a clicking could also be a symptom. A set of Whirlpool Agitate Cams (part number 62580/01) cost about $15.00.

It's a bit messy to fix (16 oz. of oil in the transmission) but very inexpensive.

See the following for how to remove the transmission.

In order to get the transmission out, you have to remove the cabinet, the fabric dispenser and both agitators.

The top agitator uses a plastic 1/2" drive bolt. A 1/2" socket extension works well.

You don't have to remove the drum.

You can also see this site for removing the transmission.

ILLUSTRATED DESCRIPTION OF REMOVING CABINET THRU TRANSMISSION.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Lay the machine down (after disconnecting power and hoses, remove the pump (two clips), the motor (two screws hold two clips on the motor), lift and set the motor aside, remove two 1/2 inch bolts for the motor mounting plate and three 1/2 inch bolts for the transmission. Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft, remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 15 Oz of 80-90 weight gear oil. (Available at auto parts stores)

Remove the transmission cover.

Pull off the spin pinion.

Push down on the agitate spring and remove the spring clip. Note where is attaches to the main shaft.

The two plastic agitate cam parts pull right off. Don't lose the washer on top of the cams.

Replace the cams, washer, spring and clip, pinion, oil (assuming you drained the oil first), cover and clutch parts.

Line up the transmission so that the release cam on the brake drum will snap onto the clutch spring retaining clip and put all parts back in the washer.

I'd also check the Motor Coupler (a $15.00 item that tends to wear) while you have the transmission out.

The basic tools are screwdriver, small socket set with up to a 1/2" socket, vice grips or good pliers (to remove and replace clips)

Kenmore washer agitates on spin cycle

Obviously the washer should be either just spinning or agitating. The transmission ,or in this style washer it is called the gearcase, is bad and would need to be replaced. The gearcase controls the spin and the agitate in this washer. The part number is 3360629 and retails for $172.77. To replace; Unplug washer, remove the 2 trim pieces on either side of the console, remove the 2 screws under the trim, lift the console and rotate to the back, remove the 2 retainers going from the back into the cabinet, remove the cabinet, remove the drain pump, remove the motor, remove the agitator, remove the gearcase with 3 bolts holding it on. The gearcase will now slide out of the washer. Transfer the clutch and motor mounting plate to the new gearcase and reassemble in the reverse order.
Thank you

Kenmore 8288100 will not agitate properly, i replaced the dog ears but that did not solve the problem. It also makes a loud noise during the agitate cycle

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine. Sears has a parts list for model 82881100.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

It's hard to diagnose what "will not agitate properly" means. However, since you've replaced the dogs and are getting a loud noise during the agitate, try to isolate where the noise is coming from.

Remove the cabinet, see GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission. http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

If you jumper the two outside pins on the lid switch you will be able to start the washer and listen to the agitating. (We used a couple of bunge cords to keep the back of the washer from flopping around)

When it begins to agitate, listen closely to the transmission. If the noise appears to be coming from the transmission, the problem may be in the agitate cam and / or gear in the gear box.

Look at the gear box diagrams on the Sears site.

We had a major noise problem with our top loader and traced it to worn agitate cams.

Pulling and replacing parts in the transmission is a messy job (14 - 15 Oz. of oil) but it can be done.

Following is how we replaced the cams.

Assuming that you know how to remove the cabinet, agitator (you don't need to remove the tub), pump, motor and transmission the agitator cam and follower use the same whirlpool part number 62580/01. This is a plastic set used to raise the agitate gear on the shaft.

I had the same problem with gear grinding and this solved it.

Pull the transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (16 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

The basic tools are screwdriver, small socket set with up to a 1/2" socket, vice grips or good pliers (to remove and replace clips)

Kenmore Series 80 Washer, Model 20852 - Agitator not turning well, making noise

Hi, If the washer spins properly but the agitator does not work, it could be the dog kit needs replaced. If the washer does not agitate or spin, it is probably the coupler.
Put the washer in wash cycle with no laundry in it and see if the lower prt of the agitator moves. If the agitator moves, try and hold the upper half of the agitator and see if it will only move one direction. The agitaor dog kit is designed to only let the top part of the agiator to grab one way. When they go bad, they can make some noise.
To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16” bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the 2 halfs of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Kenmore 90 plus series: heavy duty super capacity won't agitate

this is the site to find out how to fix your washer.
you have a broken drive coupling.
it probably wont agitate or spin, but will fill and drain.
you need to remove 2 screws from the control panel, hinge it back and then remove the 2 brass colored clips that hold the cabinet to the base. once you do then pull the entire cabinet forwards to a 45 degree angle and pull it off the base.
then pull the 2 clips off pump and then 2 more on the motor. that will allow you to get to the drive coupling. you will find it to be broken.
replace it with part number 285753a for about 15-20 bucks.
