TV Won't Turn ON-Sony FD Trinitron WEGA 30"

For the past few months it took longer for the picture to display on my TV. Then suddenly while we were watching our TV the other night it turned off on its own and since then have not been unable to turn it back on. There is a small red light (I think the light is labled "Stand-By Light") on the bottom right hand corner (if facing the TV) that will blink three times when pushing the power bottom and will go out and the TV won't start. I have unplugged the TV and tried starting it to no avail and reoported the incident to Sony's Service department and they could only recommend brining it in to a technician.

Is the potential fix worth the cost of fixing? I purchased the TV 3.5 years ago for ~$1,000 and I will be pretty irritaed if I need to throw it away after such a short time.

I read a similiar issue and the solution was Flyback Transformer. What are your thoughts regarding that solution?

I had called a local repair man (recommended by the Sony Servicce Line) and let him know the issue as well of what I read and he mentioned the prospect of it being the Flyback Transformer he quoted labor to be $250 and the part (though he couldn't find a price)in the range of another $200-$300. They would also charge a diagnostic feel of $95 so in total it would cost me nearly $700 to fix a TV I purchased for $100 3 years ago. Wanted to get a second opinion of whether the issue appears reasonable and the estimate to fix such an issue would be in that range.

    Thanks,
    Patrick

I called the SONY Service/Help Line and let them the number of blinks (3) and they did not have problem that corresponds to 3 blinks. They instructed me to unplug the TV and plug it directly into the wall and wait a few minutes and after doing so the problem was not solved.

The 3 blinks are a diagnostic code indicating the circuit that triggered the shutdown. In this case it indicates an over-voltage condition. There is a problem in the power supply area. I will need to look up your specific model to provide you with the details. As long as the flyback transformer is OK, the parts cost will be in the $25 range. The flyback could increase the parts cost by $75-$120. I will try to provide a more exact parts list and cost soon.

The cheapest (and easiest ) troubleshooting to do would be a hard reset: Unplug the TV from the AC power source, remove all cables running from the TV. Wait about 4 hours minimum and then reconnect to AC source and redo the cables. If that doesnt work, then you've most likely got issues with the power circuitry/components.

If you purchased your TV for just $100 3 years ago, the I think you've got your money's worth for it. Its probably time to move on to a new one.

The reason I say that is because any repair on this unit will be a minimum of at least about $100 just to run diagnostics and find the cause of the issue. Repairing and parts will cost even more.

I could give you a list of things that could be wrong, starting with the fly back auto transformer, or any number of capacitors on the board, but it would not be worth your while, especially if you have no prior experience fixing CRT's. They are notorious for carrying high voltages even when unplugged...voltages that can kill.

My honest advice would be to simply purchase a new TV.

It would certainly be worth your time to describe the problem to local repair technicians over the phone.

Very often a replacement board is all that is needed, and if they own premesis, you can take it to them.
It will certainly be cheaper than $1000.

    Hi,

You mentioned in your first post the cost was ~$1,000, yet in the second post $100.

If it is the latter, then you may have to cut your losses on this one.

As mentioned above, there are other faults known for this unit, so if one is repaired, there is no guarantee that something else will soon go wrong with it.

It may be time to weigh up the unknown costs and hassle, versus a sure replacement with at least 12 months guarantee.

Sorry this is not a quick fix for you.

Sounds like you have a shutdown condition in the power supply section.Your gonna need a service manual a vom and possibly a good scope. Theres not much you can do as too look at it and see a bad part. And theres not alot you can check staticly without a service manual. Although there is a common problem with this chassis as were in some of the older models of sony.. the Horizontal driver transformer as well as the regulator ic has a cold solder joint on them. Good luck

This is what you should do, call Sony TV techs 1888,989,7669 give them the model and serial number then tell them how many blinks, they will suggest IC-numbers on the Silicone board, See if you can locate them, its is a commen problem they already know about it, then before u hang up as for the part number then u can cross refference the sony part number with the accual part number. They will give u numbers then u have to figure out what they are maybe its on the part itself if u can make it out. Then find a parts distributor and replace them. Most likely the parts range from 6-12$ just becareful with the board, make sure u dont break of any small resistors. Or if ur not really tech savy should take it to a local service tech
