Could be a software/driver problem or a hardware problem. Try booting into safe mode by pressing the F8 key when the Windows screen first appears. If you are able to get to the desktop then the problem is most likely with a driver or some software application. Check for any installed updates or driver changes. Also check for spyware or virus problems.

If the computer won't boot into safe mode either, then the problem could be hardware related. Reseat the memory and try to post the system. If you have more than one stick of memory, try booting Windows with only one stick at a time installed.
Make sure you power off the laptop and disconnect the AC adapter before removing or installing memory.
Other causes of the problem could be a corrupt Windows file or a defective hard drive, or a heat related problem (bad CPU fan or blocked cooling ducts). One way to verify the hardware function is to boot from a live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu Linux. You can find out more information on either of these operating systems by Googling for them.

As it boots up depress the F10 or the F 8 key till the bios comes up, there should be a restore feature. Try to restore computer to original configuration...

Desktop not accessible/ full black display

Presumably you see items on the screen while the os is loading and you are able to see the login prompts?
If this is a windows OS start it up in safe mode (tap f8 when first turned on to get a boot menu) to see what happens. Sounds like a resolution issue. If windows opens in safe mode look for evrror messages in the system logs relating to graphics gards or look at lowering the graphics resolution, also try attaching an external monitor. Post back if you get stuck

My screen goes dark when I use my laptop. I have a docking station with monitor and the machine works fine. However when I undock or start up with just the laptop the screen goes black. I can still see...

Hi wilhejl,

I see that you are experiencing a video issue with you back light on this case,
you mentioned when docked on your docking station you see the video on you monitor but when undocked you get a black LCD screen and see shadows of what is on the LCD screen.

this is a back light issue that you are experiencing.

We can try and check some settings regarding this concern and se if there is anything we can do to correct what you are experiencing with your laptop

As soon as you turn your Laptop on keep on tapping F1 to will bring you to the BIOS screen if the BIOS shows up on you LCD screen without going black then most probably yo may need to change some settings in windows regarding the the LCD and power options.

  • Try docking back into your docking station and inside windows go to power options, and set your system power options to balanced.
  • On your Desktop right click anywhere on an open space to get the menu list click on personalize then click on display then click on advance settings, look for screen refresh rate change it to 59Hrtz then undock from your docking station and try booting into windows without using the docking station to check if the video will show on the LCD again on this issue.
I hope that this can help regarding your case,

Have a nice day.

Laptop is working fine until the screen goes black

The problem of black screen can also happen in other versions of the Windows. However, the symptoms and effects of the problems in all operating systems are almost same. For instance, when a user starts his Windows, everything goes fine. But when he logs into it there awaits a black screen instead of the normal desktop layout. An average computer user finds it very disturbing and has no clue how to fix Windows 7.
However, the best way to find a solution to this problem is to fix the registry errors in your computer which become the cause of all major Windows errors and crashes. The registry in Windows 7 is a very important component of the entire operating system and it stores information about the Windows settings. If these settings are not adjusted properly then there start to appear strange computer problems such as Windows 7 black screen.
Here are some discrete steps you shall also take besides fixing your Windows 7 registry which is inevitable for safer and stable computing:
* Conduct an antivirus and antimalware scan. Fixing for malwares after a registry scan gives an extra protection to the PC and saves PCs from lots of dangerous infections.
* Start Windows 7 in safe mode and restore your PC/system to the previous date after which you received the Windows 7 updates. It is believed that some updates may be behind these screen issues in Windows 7.
* Adjust your display settings since the wrong settings may also cause the Windows 7 black screen also called the blank screen. You can do this by starting Windows in safe mode.
Follow all the guidelines and start from registry repairing scan for Windows 7 to fix Windows 7 black screen. The best available tool to repair registry and fix PC errors such as this is Reg In Out.

My lenovo t60 screen goes black 15 seconds after

Hi, try to boot into safemode, turn your system on then keep on tapping F8 to get the windows advance Menu screen, select safemode.

In the safemode windows go to Control panel and check your power options, you will see what time frame your system has for the LCD when turning off.

If this does not fix the issue, try booting into safemode with networking for you to be able to go online in safemode try updating your BIOS from your Manufacturers Website, Updating your bios may fix the issue.
