I bought the mcafee total protection and it will not install

I have the same problem.

Go into search mode, type in words such as Mcafee in all files and if some thing comes up delete. This will clean out any old Mcaffe which many manufactures installed. Alos do the same with Nortons, or the word symantic. Good Luck
