Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have two computers networked together with a Netgear DS104 Dual Speed Hub and an ADSL connection with a Netgear DG632 ADSL Modem Router. I have recently bought a wireless laptop and want to connect it to the broadband connection but don't want to disrupt the network connection between the two computers. Can you please suggest the best wireless router for the job?

Where do find my security key to connect to the internet..I,m trying to set up a new computer..Thanks

If you have access to a wireless computer that is already connected to and operating on your network, then you should go here and download this utility http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=Im-88880-1&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
and then run it. Once it fully scans, click on Show Advanced Tools in the bottom left of the window and select Retrieve WPA/WEP Key, it will be on the right side.

If you do NOT have a wireless computer available, then you need to loginto your router (sorry, but I do not know which router you have) and go to the wireless page. If you have WEP, just copy down the WEP key that has the radial button selected (green dot) and that is your key. If you have WPA, copy the Preshared key.

If you do not know how to get to your router setup, go to a computer that is conencted to your router by a LAN cord. Go to Start > Run and in the Run window type CMD. If you have Vista or Win 7, go to the Start Orb and just type CMD into the serch bar. In the command prompt window type IPCONFIG /ALL now look for Default Gateway (that's your router) and copy down the IP Address.
Now open a web browser utility and type that IP Address into the address bar.

How do i connect a netgear wireless router to comcast modem

Unplug your Comcast modem from your electrical outlet. Connect the Ethernet cord from the back of your Comcast modem into the Ethernet port labeled "Internet" on your new router. Connect an available Ethernet port from the back of the new router to the Ethernet port on the back of your computer.

Plug your cable modem into an electrical outlet. Plug your new router in an electrical outlet.

Reboot your computer. Click on "Start," then "Control panel." Click "Network and sharing." Select "Set up a new home network."

Click on the option for a router or cable modem when prompted by Windows to select your hardware. Your computer will attempt to access your new router. When the brand name for your router is listed, double-click it so your computer can configure itself to the new router.

Create a new name for your home network and create a unique password to prevent unauthorized users on your network. Your computer may reset your Comcast modem and router so your new changes can take effect.

Howto set up netgear router to my computer?

Turn your cable-modem (or DSL-modem) off.
Turn your computer off.

Unplug one end of the Ethernet cable from the network-port on your computer.

Plug that end into the WAN port on the router.

Take another Ethernet cable, and connect one of the LAN ports on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Turn the cable-modem on.
Turn the router on.
Turn your computer on.

Done -- the 'default' configuration in the NetGear works, 100% of the time.

I have a DSL502T ADSL Router, and have bought a new emachines computer. I can not connect to the internet. The computer has a wireless connection loaded but I want to connect by dailup Please could you help...

You are a bit confused with the various components required for Internet connections.
If you have a dial-up connection with an Internet Service Provider, all you do is connect your computer's modem port to the phone line and dial the phone number of your Internet Service provider.
If you are connected to the Internet Servise Provider by ADSL and have a combined ADSL router and modem then you connect the phone line to this router/modem. If the ADSL modem is separate component then the phone line is connected to the ADSL modem and this modem is connected to the router with a LAN cable and the computer is connected to the router with another LAN cable. If the route is wireless and the computer has a wireless card then you don't need a LAN cable between the router and the computer.
If you are connected to the Internet by ADSL, to secure your Internet connection and configure your computer so it can connect to the Internet, please follow my instruction - click on this link :-

Just bought PB Ixtreme x5620. i am trying to connect my virgin broadband to the pc. i have netgear router which has the yellow cable in the moden and router and the blue cable in the PC and router. i can...

Hi,

Can you supply more detail of your network setup? You have a broadband modem, a seperate router and the PC.

For this setup cabling should be ....

1. Phone Socket (Pref. Master socket) to ADSL socket on modem

2. Modem LAN socket to Router WAN socket

3. Router LAN socket to PC Ethernet socket

Usually in this configuration you will have to switch off DHCP on either the modem or the router as they may both be trying to supply IP addresses to your PC. I would suggest disabling DHCP on the router and leaving the ADSL modem to supply IP addresses. If you do this you will have to setup the Router with a valid fixed IP.

Have fun!

Cheers,
Ripface.

My netgear dg834 wired router ceased to get an ADSL connection for no apparent reason? The ADSL connection, filter and cabling all work (as I've tried with a modem). Hmmm?

I'd try a hard reset by unplugging the router, holding in the reset button for 30 seconds, while you plug the router in and see if you can get it going again. If not its time for a new one.

How to connect wireless router, Netgear WGR614, to my computer?

4 steps to set up your home wireless network
1.
Choose your wireless equipment
The first step is to make sure that you have the equipment you need. As you're looking for products in stores or on the Internet, you might notice that you can choose equipment that supports three different wireless networking technologies: 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. We recommend 802.11g, because it offers excellent performance and is compatible with almost everything.
Shopping list
• Broadband Internet connection
• Wireless router
• A computer with built-in wireless networking support or a wireless network adapter

A wireless router
The router converts the signals coming across your Internet connection into a wireless broadcast, sort of like a cordless phone base station. Be sure to get a wireless router, and not a wireless access point.
A wireless network adapter
Network adapters wirelessly connect your computer to your wireless router. If you have a newer computer you may already have wireless capabilities built in. If this is the case, then you will not need a wireless network adapter. If you need to purchase an adapter for a desktop computer, buy a USB wireless network adapter. If you have a laptop, buy a PC card-based network adapter. Make sure that you have one adapter for every computer on your network.
Note: To make setup easy, choose a network adapter made by the same vendor that made your wireless router. For example, if you find a good price on a Linksys router, choose a Linksys network adapter to go with it. To make shopping even easier, buy a bundle, such as those available from D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Microsoft, and Buffalo. If you have a desktop computer, make sure that you have an available USB port to plug the wireless network adapter into. If you don't have any open USB ports, buy a hub to add additional ports.
2.
Connect your wireless router
Since you'll be temporarily disconnected from the Internet, print these instructions before you go any further.
First, locate your cable modem or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off.
Next, connect your wireless router to your modem. Your modem should stay connected directly to the Internet. Later, after you've hooked everything up, your computer will wirelessly connect to your router, and the router will send communications through your modem to the Internet.

Have you accessed and setup your wireless part of the modem?

To access the router settings menu, you will first need to log into the Wireless router following the steps below:
Open Internet Explorer
In the address bar type the following address:
192.168.0.1

You will be prompted to enter a Username and Password to access the interface, please use the following default details:
Username: This can be found on the bottom of the router
Password: This can be found on the bottom of the router

From the list on the left hand side, click on ‘Router Status’.
Within the Router Status section there are two areas you will be able to access:

Show Statistics
Connection Status

The Router Status page gives you a detailed status overview of the connection configured on the Wireless router.
Click ‘Connection Status’ to see more information on the broadband connection.
If you have already configured your broadband, you are able to establish/terminate the connection by clicking Connect/Disconnect.
You can also click ‘Show Statistics’ to show you current connection speed and more information on your Broadband connection.
Clicking on Basic Settings enables you to check all the Internet settings of your Broadband connection. Including the Login name (username) and password, IP address and type of connection.
Clicking on ‘Test’ will perform a standard check of your Internet connection and settings.
ADSL SETTINGS
The ‘ADSL Settings’ section provides you with some more information about your Internet connection. These are:
Multiplexing Method
VPI
VCI
WIRELESS SETTINGS
This section gives you full information regarding the Wireless connection. From here, you can change security settings, the SSID (Name) of the router and the access control list. Options list from:
Name(SSID) virgin broadband (default)
Region Europe(default)
Channel 11(default)
Mode g&b(default)
Enable Wireless Access point
Allow broadcast name
Security options (None, WEP and WPA)
- hope this helps
