Question about Canon Pixma MP990 InkJet Printer
It sounds like you are having an issue with paper saturation and this is causing your fuzzy borders.
Are you using photo paper with your cannon or normal paper? You also might try ink jet paper. There is paper for ink jet printers made to cut back on sturation problems.
Also what is the model of HP you have. If it is laser based you have no ink to cause a saturation problem with.
