Question about Teac P-988 Turntable

Teac P-988 Everything sounds slow/warped

Hi, my kids bought me a Teac P-988 a few years ago. I set it up to use and all of my albums sound slow or warped. I just set it up again and took my albums out of storage - same problem. The albums have always been stored properly and I have over 100. So I am sure that there must be an adjustment I can make to the needle/arm, but I have no manual. Thanks for your help. Philip

I am having the same problem with my Teac Nostalgia GF-188 turntable. I bought a bunch of records at Goodwill (for 25 cents each), and tossed them all in the trash after playing them because they sounded like they had spent an afternoon in the hot sun. A while later I went to listen to my good records, and they all sound warped too. I have no idea how to trouble shoot this one.

Not passing the "wow and flutter" specs, eh?
The most common cause of this is a loose or defective belt. An inferior belt will have varying thicknesses along it's length. When it hits a skinny part, it will slow slightly. When it hits the thick part, it will speed slightly. Overall effect is that the record sounds warped. has got some good stuff.

New Records sound is bad

Very strange! Apart from the fact that new albums could be faulty which seems unlikely, the only thing I can suggest is that they could be building up static. So I should look into ways of getting shut of that. If not you could adjust the weight on the arm, to see if that cures the problem.

Hi, I have a Teac P-988 and it doesn't play very loudly

If you cannot get it to amplify then your problem is more than likely in the stylus or arm down pressure. Give that a try and if that is not it post more information on what you have tried.

Teac P-988 turntable Need to change needle

don't replace the cartridge. it is "built-in" (not user-replaceable) needle options are at above links. The different prices of the "211" needles are different quality levels. All of which will fit in your cartridge.

All my vinyl sounds warped on turntable

Most common problem is the belt getting soft, especially if it has sat for a long time. It will get a weak spot where it sat on the drive pulley and every time the turntable goes around and hits that weak spot it will slow down a little making it sound like a warped album.

The belts are usually very easy to replace. Usually just lift off the turntable or there might be a small clip on the center pin, then it lifts off. Replacement belts can be ordered from several places, as shown in this search...
