Question about Magic Chef Refrigerators

Open Question

I own a Magic Chef 20.8 cu. ft. Frost-Free Refrigerator/Freezer, Model CTF2120AR. It was purchased when my house was built in 1997 by the original home owner. I do not have the owner's manual. My problem is that water is accumulating in the bottom of the refrigerator cabinet under the crisper drawers. It appears to be dripping from the unit on the top of the cabinet located on the center rear wall, the unit that has the fan in it. The water runs down the back wall of the cabinet, puddles on the back ledge, and eventually runs and pools under the drawers. Sometimes I've seen it run down the front corners of the frig, and run under the appliance on to the floor. It seems like there must be a simple fix, like a drain line is plugged. Is there something that I can do myself at home, or is this a job for my service man?

SOURCE: MAGIC CHEF CTF1920ARA - Freezer works, Refrig. portion does not.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

SOURCE: water accumulating in bottom of freezer and leaking onto floor

Yes the drain is clogged and the water that supouse to go through became ice so it make it worse.Put hot water in the drain hole until it runs through,it'll go to an evaporative pan on top of the compresor to keep it warm and vaporize the water.

SOURCE: 2006 Whirlpool 20.9 cu ft,

If you access the panel in the rear of the unit, check the evaporator tray, is it dry? It shouldn't be! If so, check the drain hose above it. It is likely plugged.

SOURCE: The drain at the center-base of the freezer

There is supposed to be a defrost element that goes through the first part of the drain, it may have been pulled out or it may be malfunctioning. After the evaporator defrost cycle the water should drain through the drain tube, since it's frozen up the water just accumulates in the fridge. If you take off the inside panel that covers the evaporator coils (the coils that freeze up) you should be able to see the evaporator defrost element and the drain defrost element. Inspect the drain defrost element to see if it's in the drain tube like it should be or if it needs to be replaced.

I have a Haier refrigerator model #rrtg18paaw and the freezer is not working but the fan is please help?

At this point I am assuming the refrigerator portion is working. It sounds like it may be a thermostat or a low refrigerant charge. If you cannot find it with the links I have attached you should contact a servace tec but also it possibly is in warrenty so start where you purchased the unit.

Magic Chef RB15FA0AA Refrigerator I have this refrigerator and it still works fine. I would like to know it's total cu ft capacity. Also what the refrigerator and freezer each cu ft capacity is.

After some work online...I found this advertisement buried among a bunch of other ads:
Magic Chef RB15-1A: Top-freezer style with 14.6 cubic ft. capacity and optional ice maker -- $439.

So, as I suspected the "15" in the model number is the cubic feet (total I would say). The 14.5 is probably actual, with the unit "rated" as a 15 CF.

Naturally, to find the cu. ft of the freezer, measure in inches then multiply the width X height X depth and divide that resulting rather large number by 1728 to get your cubic feet of the freezer.

You could also do the same with the refrigerated section, and add the results together and they should be near 14.5 total.

I have a Magic Chef freezer built older than 20 years. 15.2 cu. ft. pt. no. 101403-1

Hello Darrell;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.

Why do you think your Magic Chef is still working after 20 years? Your unit was manufactured with reliable cast steel components.
Do you want to purchase a new unit with more efficiency with components manufactured with plastic and cast ceramic. If you do decide to purchase a more efficient unit, do not discard your well build Magic Chef. When the new unit fails after 5 years, you will always have the older well built unit.

I have a Magic chef upright freezer i can hear the compresser running but it will not freeze meat

Has this happened suddenly? Look at the shelves to see if there is a frost line. If the shelves that also carry the Freon appear to have a frost line your freezer may have a Freon leak. If there is a Freon leak it will be better to begin looking for a replacement freezer. Let me know what you see, Thanks Sea Breeze
