FN key problem

I have no idea why, but one day the function keys on my wireless dell inspiron 1501 were activated and I don't know how to turn it off. This affects the keys jklmuiop0987;/ - i can only get them by pressing on the function key - which is highly annoying. What can I do to get the keys back to normal!! (It's taken me about 15 mins to type this)...

I have the same problem but on my laptop , I have an inspiron 700m ..it seem to be software related because the keys work fine when i log on (my password has letters with the associated function number);however, after im in windows (Xp to be exact) I have to use the fn to get the desired letters(3etters)....as i am doing now.

If i attach a usb keyboard the problem does not exist

Touch pad is turned off.

Well, I'm not able to find your computer model with the info you've provided. What I would suggest is: If there is a keyboard combo (the Fn key plus a special function key with a picture of a mouse or touchpad on it), press that combo to turn on the touchpad. These days it's advantageous to turn the touchpad off to avoid accidently touching it. You can also check in the device manager to see if the touchpad has been disabled.

Hi ,i purchased my dell inspiron laptop recently.2 days onwards, touch pad is not working.could you please help me?

My dear friend this will usually be a problem with the function keys, you might have de-activated the touch pad. Try to check in the function keys and you may find a key with marking of touch pad usually it would be F4 so to activate it you need to Hold Fn+F4 key and try. It will sure work well and this is not a problem with the machine.

I need to know how to use the numpad keys on my dell inspiron 1545 laptop with windows 7. its urgent

You have to press Fn and Num Lock keys to activate numeric keyboard, rembember deactivated when you wish to use the letters that share the physical keys with numpad, this is done in the same way that you activated it ( Fn + Num Lock).

Dell inspiron 1501 laptop keyboard is typing odd numbers and symbols instead of some of the lettters. Examples, the letter "l" comes out "3" . Other letters come out as a back slash, etc. A plug in USB...

Is the Num Lock light lit? This light is the one all the way to the left of several on the computer to the left of the power button (it looks like a padlock with a 9 in the center). The integrated number pad is probably active. Press to toggle this feature off. The Num Lk key is to the right of the various function keys but to the left of the keys labeled Insert and Delete.

I hope this helps.

I need an explanation as to the secondary function of the keys on my NB305. Mainly the top row of 'F' keys, but the remainder of the keyboard as well. What do all these little symbols on the keys mean?

F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. The function executed by individual keys depends on the software you are using.

1. Sound Mute: Pressing Fn + ESC in a windows environment turns sound on or off. Press Fn + Enter to simulate Enter or the enhanced keyboard's numeric keypad. 2. Instant security: Press Fn + F1 to blank the screen to prevent others from accessing your data. To restore the screen and original setting, press any key or press the Touch Pad. 3. Power save mode: Pressing Fn + F2 changes the power save mode. 4. Standby: When you press Fn + F3, the computer enters Standby. 5. Hibernation: When you press Fn + F4, the computer enters Hibernation. 6. Display selection: Press Fn + F5 to change the active display device. Hold down Fn and press F5 again to change the device. 7. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness in decrements. 8. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F7 increases the display brightness in increments. 9. Wireless setting: If your computer has both Bluetooth and Wireless LAN functions, you can press Fn + F8 to select which type of wireless communication you want to use. 10. Touch Pad: Pressing Fn + F9 in a windows environment enables or disables the Touch Pad function. 11. Press Fn + F10 or Fn + F11 to access the integrated keypad. When activated, the keys with gray markings on the bottom edge become numeric keypad keys (Fn + F11) or cursor control keys (Fn + F10). The power on default for both settings is off. Press Fn + F12 (ScrLock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on default is off. 12. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (reduce): To reduce the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 1 key while holding down the Fn key. (13. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (enlarge): To enlarge the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 2 key while holding down the Fn key.

Dell Laptop - Keyboard "Fn" is causing problems!

I think it is not the Fn key but the NumLock that is activated. Look for the key labeled NumLk , this is the number lock. Also check if the light on the notbook with a number (usually number 1) is on. If it is on, yo must deactivate the numlock by pressing it again. It works in toggle mode. Sometimes the numlock is activated together with the shift key, sometimes with the function key.
