You have to calibrate the printer. It thinks there is no ribbon (thermal mode) so it's not winding the ribbon up. The instructions are on page 11 of the manual -
4.2 Ribbon Sensor Calibration
Note: Please make sure the ribbon is properly installed before doing this calibration.
Please follow the steps below to calibrate the ribbon sensor.
1. Turn the printer power off.
2. Press and hold the FEED button then turn on the printer.
3. The LED will turn orange then blink red 5 times. Release after the first red blink and before the 5rd.
4. If the ribbon is properly installed the light will turn green. If it is not it will turn red and blink.

Error message: Ribbon out keeps displaying when there is a fresh roll in the spool, checked everything I could see and find nothing Possible bad sensor?

Check that the metal ribbon blade spindles are in place. these hold the ribbon core in place. Also make sure the ribbon is not loaded over the ribbon reflective plate.( under the head mech where the label guide slot is) Try a manual calibration in the menu.If it asks for a password, its :1234. There could be a slack or broken belt. just fyi: there are (four / 4) belts. The ribbon motors rarely go bad, if all else fails , its probably a ribbon control board. Also check that there is not any junk stuck on the ribbon/ auxiliary roller gear. Sometimes toggle pressure is the culprit. If there is not enough pressure on the head plate, sometimes it will slip.

Can not reload lables in the gun

Depending on the type of gun that you have, loading will vary. Here is the most common style of label loading:
  • At the back of the pricing gun, there's an opening with two spindles to hold a roll of labels. There's also a slot and two small, black rollers, where you'll place the first label to begin feeding them into the gun.

Insert a roll of labels into the gun opening so that the beginning of the roll is at the back and comes up over the top of the gun. Insert the beginning of the roll into the slot, squeezing the trigger halfway. Push the labels through the gun until they come out at the front. Thread the labels up and under the black plate on the front of the gun and then under the rubber roller. Squeeze the trigger again and pull six or seven labels out. Discard the labels, leaving the paper backing. Thread the paper backing into the underside of the gun, next to the handle, in the direction indicated by the arrow. Push the paper backing while squeezing the trigger until the gun begins dispensing labels.ixzz18ERFHy

When the roll of black thermal material is used up, how do you get it off the finished roll? Is there a way to reverse the direction of the feed? How is that done?

grab the roll and at the same time, squeeze and pull toward you. The take-up spindle will collapse slightly and the used ribbon will come right off.

    Hope that helps !

There is one motor and two belts - one belf for each ribbon spool. It's possible the belts are the problem, but it sounds more like it's the ribbon spindle itself. The spindles contain clutches, and when the clutches bind up the spindles don't want to turn. Sounds like you need a new ribbon spindle.

Ribbon error message is displayed when the rotation of the ribbon spindle is not performed or not correctly detected. This can be due to various factors.
    - The ribbon roll is not correctly fitted to the spindle.
    - The sensors detecting the rotation are out of order or completetly filled with dust or grease.
In this case clean the sensors.
Another reason may be due to Direct thermal printing with a ribbon mounted.

    Error code 754

It's very possible you are not installing the ribbon properly.
When loading a new ribbon on a Monarch printer, you must save the plastic ribbon core (it's butter yellow in color) from the previous roll of ribbon. The core is what the ribbon is wound up on.
Do not throw away this plastic core - you need it for the next roll of ribbon you load!
You have to move this now empty core from the back ribbon spindle and slide it on the front ribbon spindle. You then load the new ribbon on the back spindle and attach the ribbon end to the empty plastic ribbon core on the front spindle.
You CAN NOT just tape the ribbon to the front spindle. You must have an empty ribbon core to attach the new ribbon to. The printer will give a 754 error unless you have two plastic cores on the two spindles. It can also give a 754 error if the ribbon is not loaded properly, and also if you have a bad motherboard. There are no ribbon sensors, so that's never going to be a problem...

    Ribbon error 754

Your printer is not correctly configured for ribbon. Download the manual located at

Go to chapter 4-1 to see the map of the menu system and change your printer to ribbon yes.

Make sure that your printer is loaded with supplies and the ribbon is set up correctly, as well as slack taken out.

You may see a couple of labels not print well, but after that, you shold have proper tension and good print. If you notice a lot of ribbon wrinkle, you probably need to reload your ribbon or adjust the tension bars.

This should resolve any issue you have with the ribbon.
