Question about Maxtor OneTouch 4 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

The Maxtor harddrive was moved and the plug got jiggled so it wasn't showing on my pc...I fixed the issue, then kept getting an error message "checking dish one touch" with 2 choices...automatically fix file system errors, and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors...I chose both, and lost a complete file that had 72 items in it...I tried another way to view contents and it say my maxtor had zero files...later I was able to determine that apparently the 1 file was the only thing lost, but how? Can I recover this file? Is the rest of the harddrive in danger of being wiped clean? I used my antivirus scan, and malwarebytes to make sure nothing has invaded. Help!

Open My Computer
Note the drive-letter assigned to the Maxtor
Close My Computer
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
If the drive-letter was 'E:', type 'E:'
Press Enter
Type ATTRIB -H -R -S *
Press Enter
Open My Computer
Double-click the icon for the Maxtor
Does it still show "zero" files/folders?
Does it show a 'FOUND' folder?
What file(s) are in that folder?

Maxtor Basics 320 GB external harddrive cant be recognized

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Seagate troubleshooting Error Code 10, states that drive has failed. (Seagate bought out Maxtor)

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,

Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.

Don't know if this applies to your particular Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, but when I went to search for the type of harddrive it uses just now, I ran into thsi, and thought I would pass it along. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/personal_storage/ps3200-sw)

Can you recall what you were doing when you first got that error message? Try disconnecting the drive and then reconnecting it. If you still get the same message, check the Maxtor utility to see if there is some type of repair procedure that you can do without reformatting it.

Did a system recovery on pc now can't find my harddrive

Hi Shannon,
yes, you could - and should - connect the external harddrive directly to your pc in case it throws errors. You will need to do this in any case to figure out, what is wrong with the drive.

Connect the USB cable to your PC and check whether the drive is recognized by your Operating System. If it fails to be detected get back to us and we will try to help you.
