> stopped working toady (froggy? today?)

It "died" -- either the electronic circuit-board "under" the "spinning" part of the disk-drive has short-circuited, or the motor that spins the recording surfaces has quit.

You've tried it on another computer -- so you've done all that you can.

Any 500GB disk-drive is likely to still be under the W.D. warranty.
Open the enclosure, and get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access the W.D. web-site, and click "check warranty status", and enter that information.
If the warranty is valid, W.D. will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- purchase a new W.D. device from the W.D. web-site, and you qualify for a good discount on your purchase.

Or, remove the disk-drive from the enclosure, buy a replacement, compatible, disk-drive, and "transplant" it into the enclosure, to create a working external storage device.

SATA doesn't use the Master/Slave scheme like PATA. You simply plug it in.

Hi guys, i have a new WDbluecavier 500Gb,16Mb cache but the allocate space is 467978..so how can locate the remaining space??

This is the real capacity of your 500 GB hard disk - they are measuring it incorrectly for commercial reasons (in reality it's just 488GB) and there is a part that is reserved internally. There is nothing else.

I bought a "My DVR Expander" to use with my DirecTV HD DVR. Does Western Digital make this expander in anything larger than 1TB? If so, where can I buy one?

Note that your DVR will treat this as "extra" storage, i.e., supplemental to its "internal" storage.

A 1 terabyte hard drive allows you to record:
  • Up to an additional 600 hours of Digital TV
  • Up to an additional 120 hours of High Definition TV
Since the largest EIDE/PATA disk-drive is 0.5 TB, the disk-drive inside the Expander must be a SATA disk-drive.

So, disassemble the unit, disconnect the SATA disk-drive, and pay about $300 to buy a "2000Gb Western Digital Caviar RE4 Raid Edition 7200RPM 64 Mb Cache 3.5 7200RPM 64 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD2003FYYS".

Connect the disk-drive to its interface.
Close-up the case.
Connect your "custom" PVR expander to your DVR,
and see if your DVR will recognize the 2TB of disk-storage.

I have an old Dell desktop and want to replace HD

From experience I recommend a Western Digital Hard Disk Drive as I have had far less problems with them then Seagate - As IDE is gradually being phased out I recommend acting soon as the drives will become scarce as they are very cheap and lacking in variety at the moment.

In particular the Western Digital Caviar WD5000AAKB is a good value drive - just over a hundred dollars and features 500GB of space 7200RPM and a 16mb Cache

It seems the best for value at the moment once again I advise you not to delay as vendors are gradually phasing them out.

Hope this information pointed you in the right direction ;)
