My computer does not recognise my WD element portable drive and I have no soft ware to install it, what can I do?

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.
Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new disk-drive from the W.D. web-site, at a good discount.

WD 250 G hard drive will not turn on at work

If that is the case and it works on another PC, your office PC may either..

Not have USB driver installed, and therefor cannot connect to it. I suggest running Windows Update>Custom Update, and under HardWare I imagine there should be an USB driver of some sort. That may fix the problem.

Another issue could be that the USB port has a hard ware failure. Try the other USB ports, if still nothing then it is most likely going to be a driver issue or maybe... all your USB ports have a Hard Ware failure of some sort.

You can check if you need drivers by going to Start>(Right Click)My Computer>Properties>Device Manager Tab. If there are any yellow or ! drivers, you will need to find them via Microsoft Updates, Manufacture/PC Brand Site (I.E HP) or google the driver needed for your particular modeled machine.

I hope I have been of some assistance.

Good luck!

HDD is not dedected.

the first thing that pops up in my mind is a power problem. check if the hard disk starts making a 'spinning' noise when you plug in the power chord and turn the disk on. when you hear a ticking noise instead, it means the disk is broken. be sure it only makes the spinning noise. if it does, connect the usb-cable between the disk and the computer. if the disk is not recognised, replace the cable. if still not ok, post what you did as a comment, and please be as accurate as possible, because this problem may have several causes.

Make sure you have installed the software drivers first before connecting the USB hard drive. USB is Plug and Play, and when you connect hardware that requires drivers to be installed first, it will not function correctly or not work at all sometimes..

Installing new sata drive in HP pc

a clean xp installation does not recognize sata drives at all. you can either use nlite to build a custom install cd, press f6 during setup to load additional drivers, try to change your sata mode from native to compatible in your bios or use your restore cds.
