Sporadic Hum on HLP4663W

After reading other posts, I'm guessing this is a color wheel issue but would love an expert opinion:

Starting about a week ago, my Samsung HLP4663W has a sporadic hum (not a high pitched squeal as others have said) emanating from the back of the TV. The picture is fine and this hum doesn't always happen. When it starts though, it does not go away. The only solution is to turn the set off and leave it powered off for 10-15 minutes. This isn't always a sure bet to make the sound go away either. When the TV is turned off and the picture immediatly goes black, the hum still exists. Its not until about 8 seconds after the TV is powered off and after (I believe) the fan stops that something else turns off and the noise goes away.

I would welcome any advice on what part needs to be repaired and if this is something a layman can do without paying an audio specialist $125/hour to fix it.

I would guess that its the fan for the lamp, as the color wheel will power down as soon as the power is cut. the cooling fans will continue to run

Have a Hum in the sound of the TV

If you mean there's a hum from the speakers it could be a disturbance in your AC line. Or a hum from a DLP projection TV could also be a bad color wheel. But if its from the speakers of the TV it could be noise in the power supply from a few warped capacitors.

Turbine/moaning sound and vibration

Hello,
The grinding sound that you are hearing is your color wheel. They can make a noise from a buzz to a power saw type of noise. Usually the set will continue to play with the noise, but it is annoying. You will need to replace the color wheel now.

This is not as easy as the lamp replacement, as you have to pull the light engine to access the color wheel. It is not hard just more work and be careful of the color wheel lenses.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

How do I access the color wheel on my Samsung HLP4663W?

Looking from the rear of the set, the color wheel is just to the left of the lamp, underneat an aluminum heat sink. You have to remove 7 screws to get to it.

Color Wheel problem

Replacing the color wheel can sometimes switch Red With Blue. If you remove the jumper it could fix the problem.

Here's an article on it's replacement.

Samsung Color Wheel

Here's a good article on the Color Wheel

It says if your red and blue colors are reversed removing the jumper should fix the issue.
