Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

MyBook sounds like it trys to spin up ... but it does not. Seems to be stuck (by sound of it) in an endless cycle of clicks. This happened after I restarted my PC. I remember this happening at least once before; but it finally came back up after unplugging power source and then plugging it back up.

Hi there,

There is half of the answer in the question, 2 things to look out for :

1. When the power supply is becoming defective it could act like you are describing.

2. The drive could be defective

To confirm that the power supply is not the problem you can try to find another one and try it or you can also remove the hard drive from the WD book and connect it directly to a pc.

Good luck and don't forget to vote.

My seagate hard drive wont power on,it sounds like it trys to spin then stops then trys again,my computer wont read that its connected

Do you have an different power supply to try with the hard drive? I had the exact same problem with a WD MyBook and the power supply was weak. I had the drive for a little over a year when this happened. Thank goodness for multiple year warranties on the MyBook!

Spin cycle not working properly

On the transmission there are two shift arms. One shift arm controls the agitator and the other shifts to spin the cloths. If the washer has been making a "clicking" sound when it trys to spin, the solenoid that shifts the spin shift arm is not catching and the drum will not spin. The other possibility is the spin clutch is slipping and make a "grinding/ratcheting" sound. Neither, unfortunately are inexpensive to fix.
If you can describe the sound and when it occurs, I might be able to get closer.
Let me know.

Wsherwill not spin

Sounds like the motor capacitors shorting out and/or motor windings. Check all electrical connections in motor area for burn marks - possibile loose wire connection.

Spin the fan on water pump (you can acess with difficulty from bottom of washer) if it has a little sand in it, it may clear. It is possible to remove water pump if mechanically minded and see if something small eg staple or 5c coin is stuck in it if this dosn't work or you may find you need to replace water pump.

Spin cycle trouble

possibly a segment has raised on the motor armature or a faulty motor brush. pop off the belt and put it into a spin cycle to see if you still hear the noise- if so the fault is with the motor as the drum will be still. any scraping sounds in the drum may be a lost bra wire.
