Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

Sam file when my computer is booting up it tells me that the file wimdows/system32/confg/sam is corruct, or missing how do i solve this problem? I can get on the internet, but cannot get to any programmes,like the games.When I try to remove any virusis, I cannot.

Looks like u have some sorth of worm or trojan virus thats not allowing you to access your programs. I would have to know what antivirus program you are running and if u have the updates for that antivirus program, then if the problem is not resolved after an antivirus scan you are most likely looking at reformatting your hard drive and reinstall your Operating system , it might be time for a PC cleanup, my suggestion is try backing up your important files and reinstalling the operating system. That will resolve your problem.

The SAM hive is the security function of Windows XP. I am surprised that you can boot to Windows at all. From your description, it sounds like you have a virus infection.

Since you cannot access the internet or run any programs, it may be simpler to just try to re-image the system.

If your system is a Dell 4600 it should be equipped with PC Restore (At boot, just after the Dell screen, you should have a black screen with a blue bar across the top for about 1 second) when that screen appears, press CNTL+F11 and you should be able to re-image your system. (This will wipe out all data, but should get the viruses too)

If that fails, or you don't have a Dell, the boot to your XP CD and reformat the HDD and install a clean copy of XP

insert original win installation cd and reboot... when in boot mode make sure you are booting from CD, not from disk, when message asking that you "boot up from cd " appears, just press any key, and folow procedure, but do not install a new copy of windows ! There must be "repair your computer" option on your CD, for Win Xp - it is "recovery console" ! When repairing finishes restart computer and boot from disk (just do not press anything when you see message "boot from CD..." and let windows from HDD configure it self).

Unfortunately, with this kind of error, there are times that you are not able to boot into the OS, and therefor you are not able to do a system restore. <br /> If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, you may initiate System Restore via booting into "Repair My Computer" which you can choose via the Advanced Boot Options of Windows. Here's part of an article on how to replace that registry file:

Look in the C:\windows\system32\config\regback\ folder.
There should be copies of the registry files stored inside that folder.
They are backed up periodically and stored in that folder.

If you create a MiniWin, BartPE, or a Linux Live CD, you can start the computer from CD and move the file system to the required folder, C:\windows\system32\config\.

I have windows vista 32bit OS. After doing windows updates. My computer doesnt work anymore. Is there A way to reset my computer back SINCE I can no longer boot up in safe mode or regulare mode.


Tough problem. You need to get that disk into another computer first then:
From your working Windows installation navigate to the Windows\System32\config folder on his drive and rename or *move* the following files out of the System32\config folder:
DEFAULT SECURITY SOFTWARE SYSTEM SAM
The files can be renamed with a .old extension or to eliminate clutter they can (should) be moved to another temp location.
Now, navigate to the System Volume Information folder on his drive, inside which you will fing a _restore{... folder which contains Restore Point folders numbered as such: RP1, RP2, RP3... Select the newest RP folder and inside that folder you will find a "Snapshot" folder the containing a backup of the registry hives. Copy the following files from the snapshot folder to the System32\config folder, making sure to rename them to the same names as the files they will be replacing:
Rename _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT to DEFAULT • Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY • Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE • Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM • Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAM
That may permit you to boot the computer, if it does boot to finish the repair do a System Restore to the newest available point.

Hi, This normally means that a windows file from the system32 folder is missing or corrupt. You will have repair that by using your operating system cd and go to repair when prompted. If this does not work you may have to install a clean copy of your operating system.

Boot from your Operating System CD and do a Repair. This should solve your problem.
or
To fix this issue next time, boot Operating System, F8, select Command Prompt, type the following (anything inside the parens is a comment):
C: (assumes the C drive is the default)
CD Boot
Dir
(look to see if the BCD file is missing - it probably is.)
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
(Let the script run and it should rebuild the BCD and the issue should be resolved)

Cause:
Keyboard issue
Miscellaneous corruption
Corrupt boot.ini file.
Missing boot.ini file.
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.
Solution:
Keyboard issue
This issue has also been known to be caused by a short in the ground wire in the keyboard cable. Make sure this is not the cause of your error by replacing the keyboard with a different keyboard or simply just disconnecting the keyboard from the computer.

Miscellaneous corruption
Before trying any of the below recommendations it's recommend that you attempt to load the last known good configuration. Additional information about doing this can be found on document CH000626.

Corrupt boot.ini file
This issue is often caused when the boot.ini is missing or improperly configured. This issue often arises after a user has recently added or removed an operating system on the computer or added or removed hard disk drives in the computer.
Make sure the line pointing to the operating system and it's drive and partition is properly configured in the [boot loader] and [operating systems] section. Additional information about boot.ini can be found on document CH000492.

Missing boot.ini file
Microsoft Windows XP users:
If the boot.ini is severely corrupted or missing a user running Microsoft Windows XP can rebuild the boot.ini to resolve this issue. Additional information about rebuilding the boot.ini can be found on document CH000648.

Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 users:

To restore the original boot.ini file in Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000 you will need an ERD and follow the below steps. If you do not have an ERD you will be unable to follow these steps.
Boot the computer with your Windows NT three setup diskettes or the Windows 2000 setup disc.
In the setup menu, type R to start the repair.
When prompted for the ERD diskette insert the diskette and inspect the startup environment.
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file
If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.
Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
Type exit to reboot the computer.
Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
If you are running Microsoft windows NT 4.0 on a partition larger than 7.8GB this issue can occur if the boot files are located outside this limitation. When this error occurs your computer will have the

error message as shown below.

Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

If your system partition is larger than 7.8GB you will need to delete the partition and recreate the partition to 7.8GB or less. Additional information about this issue can be found on Microsoft KB Q224526.

Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows
Attempt to check the hard disk drive for any errors by running the chkdsk error. To do this follow the below steps.

Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r
Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved.
If after trying all of the above steps you are still encountering the same issue it's likely that Windows is severely corrupted and it is recommended you attempt to reinstall Windows. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on document CH000186.
Finally, if during the Windows installation you encounter errors it's likely that your hard disk drive is bad.
