Question about Phones

1 Answer

We have an older AT&T spirit phone system, sometimes line 1 will not work, I disconnect line 1 from the phone system box and plug back in, I then get a dial tone but the line will not disconnect, this happens on any of the 5 extensions.

There is most likely a problem with your control unit and the CO line 1 will not disconnect. However, to absolutely eliminate all other possibilities, try swapping phone lines 1 & 2 and see if the problem stays at line 1 (which will now be a different phone number) or if the problem moves to line 2 which would indicate a problem with the wiring to the control unit.

Hopefully you do not use all the phone lines in your system and you can move them all down one slot. (line 1 becomes line 2, line 2 becomes line 3 etc...) and just stop using line 1. Otherwise you will need to find a replacement control unit.

Let me think. On the face of the cabinet, there are 10 or so modular jacks, one for every 2 lines and one for the 8 stations. If you plug the lines into a regular (not Comdial) phone, do you still get a dial tone?
You would get lines 1 and 3, as line 2 would be the second pair of the first jack.

If the box still lights up, I'm guessing that whatever fed dial tone into those lines got disconnected. Is this the part where you tell us you went to VoIP or cable dial tone and they disconnected the local phone company interface?

How many stations can a Panasonic D1232 support?

If it says D1232 on the box, it's a TD-1232. Look at the black and silver tag on the side of the KSU, IIRC the TD-1232's tag is on the lower right outside above the power cord. Three is a TA-1232 a TD-1232, and a 123210/11. Only the TD is digital (uses 72xx/74xx phones).

As far as SYSTEM phones, the TA/TD 1232 come out of the box as 8x16 devices and you add cards to expand it. These cards have -70 part numbers and are fairly difficult to find. (I think I have one or two on my shelf). If you really have a 123211, it also expands by using cards, that fit vertically in the card file with an AMP connector plugged into its face. Those are easier to find, the risk there is when you turn off the system to install them, it sometimes forgets to power back up.

Lastly, if you really have a TD with digital phones, there is an ANALOG port on the back of each digital phone that can be wired for seperate extensions (by default it's 100 more than the digital extension). You can add single line devices in those ports.(Some restrictions apply :-). For two quick phones, you might go that route.

I can't dial out from my handsets

Here is something to try:

Disconnect or unplug the power supply (the small black box that is plugged into the wall outlet) wait for 30 seconds and then plug it in again. Sometimes the power supply needs to reset itself. It worked for me.

Thanks,

AT&T Spirit Phone

You’ll need either a 6-button or a 24-button set SPIRIT CS administration.

First the control unit ADMIN switch must be ON, the administration overlay must be in place on station 10, and the set must be plugged into control unit jack 10 (call processing is interrupted only at station 10).

After moving the admin switch, and before dialing Ftr 7 -
From station 10 press intercom, Press speaker, Dial *0, Dial 1, Then Press Ftr 7.

Each line indicator light will show the current dialing type for that line. If the light is OFF, that line is set for touch tone dialing. If the light is ON, the line is set for dial pulse
dialing.

To change the dialing type for a line or lines, press the line button(s) and dial the appropriate digit from the table below. You may press more than one line button to make the change on more than one line. If you enter a digit without first pressing a line button you will hear the error tone.

Be sure to turn the admin switch back off when you’re finished.

Disconnect and static

Hi mgee 7890,

The main thing you stated that makes me feel the issue is with a line. Maybe not ADT. Security systems sit idle until needed. However, if it is an older system and has a failure, it could seize the line and disconnect. But with the static issue, it does sound like an inside wiring issue. There may be a short in the connection to the alarm system. I would call an independent wiring person. They are cheaper and can test from end to end. When two companies like this are involved sometimes finger pointing slows getting a resolution. So this takes care of that. Also, if there is a short they will usually reconnect it so you know you have a good connection. If this helped, please rate my response. And feel free to respond if you have any additional questions.
