Question about Ruud Air Conditioners

A/C Freon Problem - Ruud

My elderly parents recently called someone to their house to look at their central air units (one indoors and one outdoors) manufactured by Ruud.
The A/C service person told them that their unit was not fixable (it was only dripping, and my mom was worried about an ugly stain on the ceiling).
He said that the type of freon the unit used is no longer sold, and the entire unit would have to be replaced.
Is this correct?
Although its only symptom was a drip, the unit mysteriously stopped working after the technician left.
Was the service guy right? Or were my parents taken advantage of?
Thank you for your time.

Thanks... it isn't that I think all technicians are out to get us. I just feel like this one didn't adequately serve my parents.

I thought the freon thing was a little shady, and the whole debaucle has ended up costing them about $17,000. It just seemed really steep for a drip.

It seems like if an A/C was dripping, that there would be more affordable and reasonable things to do than to scrap the entire system. I could be wrong. Lord knows I don't know anything about this stuff.

Is it possible (an perhaps this is my own paranoia) that he could have replaced their system with a new one and taken their old one to repair and resell?

It's important to not jump to conclusions often a simple failure of communication is to blame, However R-22 -the most common residential refrigerant and the one being phased out is still available. The situation sounds suspicious, check with the Better Business Bureau in your area to see if complaints have been filed. But most importantly theres lots of hard working reliable and trustworthy Technicians out there that want and deserve your business seek them out and keep them busy. GL.

From what you've said I would tend to agree with you of course, As matter of principle I resist making negative comments about other technicians regardless of my personal opinion I simply use the opportunity to make the point that good business is based on trust that is built between a customer and a technician over time. I'm very sorry for your bad experience and wish you the best of luck in the future. To tip the odds in your favor shop around :)

I have a RUUD Heat Pump Model UPPB-024JAZ the outdoor pump stopped working last week. The reset button fixed the issue but whhy does it keep going off.

To start with, the tech charged you for an hours worth of service and only pushed the button. GET YOUR HOURS WORTH!
•The outdoor coil needs to be cleaned. Turn off power at the breaker and t-stat, clean the coil with water hose
•The outdoor fan motor may be slowing down or stopping due to motor bearings dry or weak run capacitor. Any noise/squealing from motor?
•Too much freon in the system.
•A restriction in the freon system.
•A improperly installed/mismatched system
•A (kynk) in the liquid line(3/8 copper)
•A stopped up or clogged filter dryer
•A dirty indoor coil that has an expansion valve(txv) will run too cold and the valve can close near "seated"
All of these, and more, can cause a HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH to open. When yours open, you have the red button to push which resets it(the switch). I have also found that the plenum(duct box that connects to your indoor unit at the discharge air) is supposed to be tapered to the air opening size of the blower outlet but that's hard to explain. If the plenum size is the same size of your indoor unit, width and depth in the upright position, the your plenum is not "tappered"(goes from one larger size to smaller size where connected to the I.d. unit). In that scenario, the high pressure switch opens during heat operation, not cool. I know, confusing. Try cleaning your o.d. coil first. And try to get an hour of work(or close) for an hour paid. And WORK SAFE!

2.5 RUUD AC not working, power must be getting to the unit.

Have them turn the outdoor unit off and wait a few minutes. When they turn it back on they should here
the fan and the compressor come on. They are to different sounds.

If they think that they have both come on, tell them to check the black insulated suction line. it should at least cold to the touch. If not it could be a freon issue.

If the line does get cold, have them checkthe filter in the house. If that is ok tell them to turn the power off
to the outside unit. Take a garden hose and wash
the outside coils on the outdoor unit,be carefull not to
smash the fins. Wash them at an angle from top to bottom.

Do you add freon to your indoor unit or your outdoor unit? I have A new 2 ton first co unit indoors unsure what I have outside. Where does the freon go?

I would highly recommend that you get a friend or hire a pro, to deal with this. You dont just add freon, is it -R22 or the new 410A type? You always charge a system from the outdoor unit! If this is a new outdoor condensor, it will be pre charged for the unit, indoor coil and roughly 15 to 25 foot of line set. But after the brazing is done,,, NEVER SOLDERING! You need to use a Vac-Pump and pull the indoor coil and lineset down to 500 microns, before you open the king valves.
If this outdoor unit was used, then does i match the indoor coil? In sizing and type of refrigerant? Need to reclaim the existig refrigerant, pull a deep vacummn on the whole system and then weigh the charge in, according to the tag on the outdoor unit. You should have a CFC license t work with any type of refrigerant, if someone turned you in, it starts with a $ 10,000.00 fine for a start, You need allof the right type of tools and knowlege, save time and money,,,, get a CFC licensed tech,he will know all of this.
Sincerely,
Paul

No power... reset outside on ac unit, checked to see if the water was not draining "clear", the digital display not showing anything

Check the 2 wire that runs from inside unit to outdoor unit for damage. Then check the indoor unit for a circuit board with a blown fuse. If no display it means no 24 v is going from heater to thermostat

How do i find coil size for a armstrong central air unit

Are you asking what indoor coil size you need to match your outdoor unit? If so the model number of the outdoor unit will have a number divisible by 12. example an 036 is a 3Ton a-c an o42 is a 3 1/2 Ton. Probably the numbers right after UAMB.

Ruud 12 seer heat pump not heating

It sounds like the unit is tripping off from high pressure. Check you filter and indoor coil. You may have low air flow inside that is causing the refrigerant pressure to be to high.
