I reinstalled windows xp about 1 month ago. It never picks up the driver for the scanner during the install so I always have to do it using the install cd. For the past month I cannot get this thing to work. I press the scan button and I get the message " an error occurred communitating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again." I have done all this repeated times with no luck. I did get a photo to copy yesterday when I pushed the "copy" button but when I push the scan button I get that message. So I know the scanner is not broken. Any suggestions?
I read somewhere it was SP3 causing the problem and to uninstall it if you can. I tried and it didn't work so the computer broke down a few weks ago and the idiots installed the wrong OS. they put on xp home instead of xp pro and the scanner is working. just wondering if, when i put xp pro back on will it still work.

Hi , Scanjet 5470c does'nt work under W 7 . No drivers available . Here are a few hints : 1° hint : Do not connect scanner . Load XP driver ( yes , XP) , reboot , connect scanner and wait for confirmation of successfull operation . Reboot . Dowload and install FreeKapture ( yes , it's free ) from http://download.cnet.com/FreeKapture/3000-2094_4-10673689.html Open Freekapture , clic on Scan and select WIA-Hewlett-Packard . Scanjet 4470c works fine in this mode but if you choose HP PrecisionScan Pro , program will hang . In any case , no slides or negatives scans possible but the rest works . 2° hint : If you have the W XP install disc , you could install a virtual version of W XP on your HDD ( http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_downloads/vmware_player/3_0 ) You could also partition your HDD ( http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html ) and install W XP on the new one . Regards .
Make sure driver XP ( yes , XP ) is correctly installed . Then , go to http://download.cnet.com/FreeKapture/3000-2094_4-10673689.html and install FreeKapture , it's free . Load FreeKapture , clic on Scan and select WIA Hewlett-Packard . Scanner works fine in this mode . If you choose HP PrecisionScan Pro , program will hang . In any case , no slides or negatives scans possible but the rest works .

Otherwise , you will have to buy a new scanner , what you probably have already done since a long time ago .
Download the file above > unplug your scanner > install the file above > reboot your computer (if needed) > login into your account > plug the scanner into your usb port > it should automatically detect your scanner > goto device manager > imaging device > right click HP Scan Jet .... > Click on Driver Tab > Click on Roll Back Driver > choose to run the driver on windows xp compatibility mode.
Or use the compatibility wizard to set scanjet pro to run on windows xp compatibility mode
