Question about LG 42PX5D 42 in. Plasma HDTV

Thanks, but it isnt that simple. Most of the supply rails are OK, but the feed to the ZSUS PCB shuts down under a problem in just one part of the overall P.S. Hard to work through on the PCB as you need to undo a lot of TO220 components to be able to work both sides of the pcb! Good suggestions! Thanks

Well I just had coffee so thought I would share tips.

if you do something like I do when working out a system .
shoot a digital picture and print or edit it on-screen.

start by documenting removed and interconnected components.
mark inputs and outputs, then power flow, regulation, feedback
then mark the main divisions to each circuit
look for a data bus. HV area,
document the hot spots and damage
if it can be maintained in shutdown mode what area got cool.
a thermal picture of board would be very helpful but you can map it manually using hands , ir sensors or thermal probe (insulated)

I use an audio probe in a lot of circuits to listen to the signals.
though some scopes have audio and digital capture I found audio to be a lot faster once you get used to it. you can hear heat noise in the dc signals, you can hear caps ticking, data sounds digital. even different voltages have special sounds.

once you make this map of a board you will find troubleshooting much faster and easier as you record the data.

print out a couple of copies and work out a system to get to them quickly.
the hardest of all but necessary is to make a rig to run the unit outside the unit.

Get yourself a good analog meter, on the Rx1 scale it puts out a small bit of voltage so you can test transistors ,diodes and cap all in-circuit , reason. if you watch the rise of the needle and speed it falls, you can tell the overall time of the charge /discharge of circuit or cap.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion, It is by the beans of
Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking
becomes a warning, it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

Have sound. But no picture

The Zsus and Ysus Board are common failures. It is a possibility that the Plasma Panel also is the problem. If you take the back off, (make sure unplug the set first), the board on your left is the Zsus and is marked accordingly. The Ysus is on the right of the Power supply. Look for fuses being open on the Zsus Board and Power Supply using a ohm meter. If they are, I would replace both Zsus and Ysus. They seen to fail together many times. If the fuses are good. I would suspect the Plasma Panel.
I hope this helps,

Will not power up. Tested from plug to power board. Power does not leave power board from any terminals.

The power supply board could very well be defective. I would also check the Zsus board and the Xsus boards. If either of these boards fail it could also cause the power supply board to fail.
You can unplug the connectors to the zsus board at the power supply and try to turn the set on. If it does turn on, the power supply board is ok. If not, the power supply is bad. If the power supply board is ok, undo the plug connectors that power the Xsus board and hook up the plug connectors to the Zsus board. Turn the set an and see if it stays on or shuts down. Part numbers should be on the boards. Zenith is really LG Corp. Their customer support number is 1800-243-0000.
Hope this helps,

LG MZ42PX14 plasma tv ... ( will n ot swich on)

It sounds like it is trying to start but detects a problem. I would start with the zsus PCB and power supply. These 2 are common problems for LG. It will take some hands on troubleshooting to get this one nailed. Thanks

I have a lg 42pc3dv plasma tv. it made a loud pop

Looking at it from the back, the board on the left is the ysus. You should see a big red cable coming from the power supply board in the middle of the set going to the ysus. Near the red cable plug on the ysus should be a fuse. Most likely the fuse has blown. If it is you need a ysus PCB. Check out If you get a new board be sure to set all the controls on the new board to match the old board. If you don't you will have little sparkles all over the screen when it comes back on. I hope this helps. You may want to check all fuses on the power supply and the zsus which is on the right side of the set. I have seen both the ysus and zsus be bad together. Good luck and thanks.

Sony PFM-42V1 bottom half of the screen is a blurry ghost image of top

The Sony Plasma designe not to repair at component level your problem I believe in YSUS PCB you can adjust a few variables resistors on this PCB make sure to mark on the spot before turn you can alway go back to original point, set your plasma on normal channel turn the variable resistor slowly and observe the picture any spot will effect the picture if you can not adjust you need to replace a new PCB
Let me know how you go

DU-42PY10X Has sound but no picture.

When a plasma has no picture I have found that 9 times out of 10 the ysus bd or the zsus bd has failed and sometimes both have failed at the same time. When you pull the back of the unit, you will find the the large pcb on the left as you look at the back is the ysus bd. and the bd. on the right side of unit is the zsus (it is about 1/2 size of the ysus bd. Check the fuses on both bds. and if one is open see if replacing will help. If it blows again the bd. that the fuse is on is most likely defective. The VS and VA voltages are listed on a tag on the inside of the plasma panel and those voltages should be checked. If either of those voltages is very low or missing, first disconnect the plug from the power supply to the ysus bd and check the voltages again. If the voltage comes up then the ysus is defective. If the v does not come up replace that plug and pull the plug from the power supply to the zsus bd and check again. If the v then comes up the zsus is most likely the cause. Remember to disconnect the AC to the unit b4 each step. Of course there are other possibilities and I alway reccomend that if your are not proficient with handling meters and AC and DC voltages then please contact a qualified service tech.
