I have a 61" hitachi projection tv model 54379 from sears do i need a converter box and what kind

You will need a standard definition converter box for that set for OTA
transmissions.

Or if you have cable, the box will have the appropriate video and audio outputs for the set.

Installing q-box assembly

The Q box in most of these is directly related to the optical light engine--a new engine comes with a new Q box and has instructions on how to Link the two together--if old Q box is left there will be issues that affect picture quality.

It is a block unit that installs in the set and should only be used with the light engine it was programmed for.

Just bought Mitsubishi WD-73740, I opened it from the box. And there is no picture. This is a brand new TV out of the box.

If brand new it is under warranty--get it fixed or if just purchased take back and either get an exchange or your money back.

Not sure why you are even here on the site but do not be tempted to tamper with a new set that does not work--will void any warranty etc.

Born to Race,

I have just bought a TEAC HBD841 which was on discounted sale at a local Electrical Store
Besides not being able to figure out how to connect the device to my elderly TV because the inadequate instruction booklet that is written in a language an Electrical Engineer would have difficulty understanding - does not explain which plugs go where, (try plugging a three plug lead into a 2 plug TV) but since then I have found out that the HDB841 has been withdrawn from sale and is no longer available.
No wonder it was cheap!
I suggest you get rid of it - quick
