How to maximize color of monitor?

I am using a compaq cv 7500 as an external monitor because my laptop lcd screen is broken. Everything is fine except for the color of the monitor , it is a bit dim. How do I make it brighter? Ive tried using the buttons for contrast/brightness on the monitor ( both at 100%) but it is still dim?
