My car doesn't start. When I turn the key to start the car it makes a clicking noise and the lights in the car start flashing. I thought is was the battery but when I got a jump charge the engine still doesn't start, but the lights go on but that is it. Help!

I took your advise and had the battery tested. Your were right, it was my battery. It was completely dead. They gave me credit on the dead battery to buy a new one, since I only had it replaced in 2008.

It sounds like the battery is bad, beacuse it wont even start with a jump. If possible take the battery off and take it to your local autoparts or even walmart car service, they will test the voltage on battery for free, from the description you are giving about the clicking sound pretty sure the battery is gone. good Luck.

I just replaced the battery 2 1/2 years ago....hmmm. I thought batteries last longer than that! Thanks for your advise. I'll take my battery out and have it checked. I thought it might be the starter.

It's easier to remove the battery first to have it tested, but if its good, then yes it could be the starter, your local autoparts should be able to test that as well. Good Luck.

I'm having the same problem! I was going to take my battery in but everyone is telling me it's probably my alternator. My problem is...if the battery is good...how can I take it any where to see if it's the alternator if I can't get it to start? I'm also wondering if it has to do with my alarm system since I just noticed my reverse lights flashing without me doing anything. Can you let me know if you found out what's wrong with your car....maybe it's the same thing. I would appreciate it...thanx My e mail is [email protected]

your battery isnt holding enough charge to crank the starter.thats what the clicking is. try charging you battery for a good 8-10 hours, if it still does the same thing you'll need a new battery.

SOURCE: rover 25 wont start with key, makes fast clicking

could be alternator not charging, put another good battery on and see what happens ,if it starts then check charge with a induction amp meter ,as these vehicles use intelegent charging system so disconnecting the battery with engine running to see if keeps running so you know alternator is ok doesnt work .if warning light goes out then renew the battery but if engine management light on then it could be a alternator fault or the ECU playing up ,and to check this out you wwill need a scope to read the fluctuations on teh sensor wire to the ECU and read the resistance to check for a fault as these vehicles use encrypted software to make it a dealer only job but it can be checked without it .

SOURCE: Clicking Noise when trying to start vehicle

check your key remote if it is not programmed the alarm will go into the kill switch mode and will not allow you to start your engine Having the same trouble with one of my keys I haven't found a way to reprogram it without calling dealer and paying a chunk.

SOURCE: clicking noise when trying to start car, battery is ok, wont start

That Clicking is the Battery causing it not to Start. You need to Replace that Battery or at Least put a Charger on it for a Couple of hours to see if you can Salvage it for a While.

Clicking noise wont start

Sounds like a weak solenoid on the starter. Probably needs starter replacement. Those cars need a mechanic to work on them.

2003 ford expedition wont start and the anti theft light is clicking and flashing fast

Turn your key all the way back towards you in the battery only postion. Then press and hold the red alarm flashing button til you hear the beeping noise it makes. This will disable your alarm and your car will start.

When my truck gets hot it doesn't want to start. Sometimes if you wiggle the key it will start, but when it doesn't start, it makes a clicking noise.

the clicking noise is most likely coming from the solenoid on the starter motor, the solenoid is like a big switch with contacts inside of it,when you turn the key to start the engine these contacts come together to transfer the power to the starter motor,if the solenoid can't be taken apart & the contacts cleaned or replaced it will have to be replaced.......hope this helps....cheers

2003 VOYAGER..TURNED KEY AND WON'T START...JUST DROVE IT AN HOUR AGO...DOESN 'T CLICK OR MAKE ANY NOISE WHEN TURNING THE KEY..ALL THE NORMAL LIGHTS COME ON..SEEMS LIKE THE BATTERY IS GOOD?

Sounds like a bad starter. You might get it to start if you tap on the starter with a small hammer or a wrench while someone turns the key for you. If this makes it start, replace the starter.

Abs light flashing sometimes, engine not starting sometimes

Are you absolutely sure it is the ABS light that is flashing?

Also, to confirm descriptions, when you state that when you try to turn it back on you get "nothing, doesn't even crank" are you saying there is no click for the starter relay, no starter engagement, and the engine doesn't spin over?

Your description of the noise when you turn the truck off sounds a bit like the sound a muffled backfire might make. Maybe the truck is running really right, but that wouldn't explain the ABS light flashing. It could explain the Check Engine Light (CEL) flashing as running rich enough to backfire would be an emissions issue which would cause a flashing CEL.
