Question about Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera

Cannot detect camera

I've installed the software and followed the instructions to upload pictures from my camera (Canon PowerShot SD750) to the computer, but I'm getting the message "Cannot detect camera. Check connection to camera, then retry". What's up?

Thank you,

Jane Beal

i don't get any message at all when i plug the camera into the computer.

i get the "no camera detected" message when i follow the instruction manual for the camera: start> all programs> canon utilities> camerawindow> powershot-ixy-ixus-dv 6> camerawindow

start> run> devmgmt.msc didn't reveal any camera or exclamation points

  • soylatte Jun 12, 2008

i tried 3 different ports and checked to make sure everything is plugging in tight. still no notification of new hardware. but actually when i unplug the cord a box pops up that says "camera connected. select the program to launch for this action:" only there are no selections available.

it's a brand new camera and cord so everything looks like it is in good shape. i can try it on my work computer tomorrow to see if it is the computer or the camera/cord.

  • soylatte Jun 12, 2008

the camera is on. and it is new with a new cable. but judging from what others have said complaining of the same problem, they've gotten new usb cords and it didn't change anything.
any other ideas? if i can't get it figured out soon, i'm going to take it to work tomorrow and try it on my computer there.

  • soylatte Jun 12, 2008

the manual just says to put the camera in play mode once it is plugged in, which i did.
i'm going to try my work computer before buying a reader. my pc has an sd picture card slot that the card fits into, but when i put it in the light blinks, but nothing happens. is a reader different than what is my computer already has?

Removing the software and reinstalling it using a clean boot may resolve the symptoms you are experiencing. The following instructions will walk you through this process.

  1. Remove the older software.
a. Unplug the device from the computer. Later you will be prompted by the software to plug in the device; do so at that time only.
b. Open the Windows Control Panel.
c. Open the Add / Remove Programs window.
d. Locate the listing for the device software/driver and remove it. When prompted to remove the device files, click Yes.
e. Locate any other device software/driver and remove it as well.

To Boot Clean in Windows Vista:
Accessing the System Configuration Utility
1. Click Start and select Control Panel
2. Click System and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double Click System Configuration

Configure Selective Startup options
1. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
2. Uncheck Load Startup Items
3. Select the Services tab
4. Check Hide all Microsoft services
5. Click Disable all
6. Click on OK
7. Click Restart.

Install the downloaded device driver/software. After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:
1. Click Start and select Control Panel
2. Click System and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double click System Configuration
5. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
6. Click Ok
7. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

If you have Windows XP, the follow this procedure after uninstalling the older software:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
6. Click on the Services tab
7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
8. Uncheck all boxes in the window or click the button labeled Disable All
6. Click OK
7. Click Restart

After restarting, install the downloaded software. PLUG IN THE CAMERA ONLY WHEN INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN THE INSTALLER. Next, do the following:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
2. Replace check marks in the items that you previously removed them from.
3. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
4. Click OK
5. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

When you plug your camera to your pc do you get a notification which says new hardware detected?

also you can check the status of your camera by

press start -> run -> type in devmgmt.msc

look for your camera and note anything with a ! mark

Try another usb port. directly on your pc. also check your usb cable is it in good shape, and if possibly try another pc to see if it is detected (you get the new hardware found notification)

  • Ekse Jun 12, 2008

basicly even without any software installed, when you plug in the camera to the pc you should get a notification on your computer screen saying new hardware detected this comes in the bottom right corner.

also does your manual say about changeing the camera mode before connecting it to the pc? it may also be that the camera is in a wrong mode for pc connection.

  • Ekse Jun 12, 2008

if the camera doesn't even work on another pc, then I would suggest either takeing it back to the shop or useing the card instead to transfer your images between your pc and camera. for this you basicly need a card reader, debending on the model of the card.

Most of them are MMC or SD

    here are a few readers

you may find cheaper models from ebay,

    http://cgi.ebay.ph/USB-2-Card-Reader-CF-...

if that link doesnt work click here

look around ebay if that spesific one is outside of your country.

  • Ekse Jun 12, 2008

well it depends on the type of card you have and the reader on your pc.

looking at your camera it has a SD card.

Are you sure the reader on your pc works with SD?

  • Ekse Jun 12, 2008

if you wan't me to check you could post me the brand and model details of your pc.

  • Ekse Jun 12, 2008

you can try puting the camera into play mode first and then connecting it to the pc.

First, ensure that your camera is on. I know it sounds stupid, but I've forgotten that part before ;) If it's still not working, it could be your USB cable. Even if it's new, it could be faulty. If you have another one available try that. I'm not sure where you bought it but most places would require you to return the entire camera in order to get a new cable for it. I would probably talk to Canon about getting a new one or just buy a new cable.

Skip the cable, software and so on.
Get a card reader/writer. They are not very expensive, and can be bought at most stores such as Walmart, Walgreens, Officemax, Radioshack, and so on.
No software is necessary and the camera does not need to be used at all. Simply put the card in the reader and copy all files to the computer.

All you need is some editing software, click here. If this problem is occuring after uploading to a website, try rotating the picture before uploading so the "problem" will actually correct the picture.

Canon sd750

You may download Canon software from here.

Bear in mind that you don't need to use Canon software. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Computer cannot detect camera at all!

This works for Windows98

1. Uninstall the Canon camera software.
2. Search for "Canon" in the registry. Delete ALL references associated with Canon camera in the registry. Just uninstalling the software will not work. Do not delete any other references to Canon products (printers, etc).
3. Re-install the Canon camera software.

I've had to do this several times. Works every time.
