A good scanner? Hmm... too many to list. But the #1 on my list is a Realistic PRO-2006 gapless frequency scanner. This scanner has no limitations to what it can scan. It scans HF/FM/AM/VHF/UHF/Air/TAC/Marine VHF/GMRS/CB/SSB/USB/LSB/WX. Hell, it even scans the FM and AM bands (the music bands). It's frequency range is up in the 1300 MHz range and is probably the only scanner you'll ever need. If it's too pricey, my second recommendation is a Regency MX4000. The Regency MX4000 is a good little scanner with a 950MHz range. It is not gapless however. It has 20 Memory channels and scans AM/FM/UHF/VHF/Air/Marine VHF/Mobile Phone/WX bands. It may be hard to find one because Regency went out of business a while back, but if you do find one, it may be worth your while.

Best Regards,

The best scanner for a household or small buisness is the kodak i40 scanner.  You can buy it used at amazon for record prices ($629).  The scanner features sheet-feeding which is the way printers work to feed paper.  It saves a lot of time and is so much fun to watch your pictures just scan themselves!  The scanner also comes with really great software.  Check it out at amazon.  Oh, and I would recommend getting it used from amazon because it is $200 dollars cheeper and is in perfect condition.

Hi,my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. You can try Radio Shack, they have a great line to choose from, but I don't know about the programed part, they will do it for you, or you can program it yourself. Get your information here at FixYa. Thanks for choosing FixYa... John

I used the wrong ac adapter on a Uniden BCD396T scanner and now it will not run on ac and won't charge the rechargeable batteries. There is the odor of a burnt resistor. It does still work using batteries...

You may have burned out any number of resistors and diodes, and may have damaged the main board, so I wouldn't trust any local guy with a soldering iron inside the BCD396T. I recommend you contact Uniden customer service through their web site, and mail the scanner to them for repair.

Radio Shack PRO197 works at friend's house but not at my house!

This seems to be a common problem with all digital systems (especially with TV signals), and the ONLY solution is a better antenna. I suggest you search eBay, Scanner Master, etc. for a low-end (price-wise) discone and mount it as high as you realistically can.

The BEST scanner in the world is only as good as the antenna that feeds it!

There appears to be two issues. First is that the St. Landry Parish is on a "Trunked" Radio system. The Scanner you have does not work on Trunked radio systems. You can program each of those frequencies in and see if you hear any traffic but you will only hear parts of the communication. This makes it very difficult to follow.

Secondly, there are some conventional frequencies listed for Opelusa but I am afraid that it looks like they may be using the trunked system now.

I would suggest you look into getting the next tier up in scanners which is a "Trunk tracker" These run about 200 - 300 Dollars. (I would suggest the BC246T or BC330T) Beyond that is a tier of scanner that also track digital system these run between 400 - 500 Dollars.(I would suggest the BCD396T) I own this one and am very happy with it. Here is a link to a great online retailer for scanners. they will be very helpful and also offer programming which might be very helpful to you.

I hope this helps,

BCD369T problem

You might be able to, if you understand how to reset the scanner's binary CPU board. But honestly, I had the same scanner with the same problem, and one way to fix it is to reprogram the entire scanner's memory. The second way is expensive, send it to a radio repair store. I'd recommend to just reprogram it and see if it works then. If no avail, you might need to have it looked at, but reprogramming it helped my problem. It's time consuming I know, but it worked.
