My sons are hunting near our house using Motorola Walkie-talkies. They are using channel 4 code 4. What frequency can I set on my scanner to see how they are doing?

If they're not exactly the same model they may have different channel indexes. If the "oddball" is a combination FRS/GMRS or if the other 3 are, they'll have different numbering. As long as you can talk between all of them, just make note of the "right" numbers when they're working.
Check your Code setting. Both the frequency and the code must be identical for the units to communicate. Shut off any special features and keep the radios at a simple setting until you get communications back.
Not all Motorola FRS radio models use the same designations for a give frequency or tone. You may have trouble talking with models different from your own...
Program your existing walkie talkie to a common frequency with no PL code turned on and listen for activity. If you are using a TalkAbout or other FRS radio you should hear activity on one or more channels if you are in a city.
Best regards.
You didn't mention a model number, so I don't know if your radio is an FRS or FRS/GMRS model. GMRS channels have more power output than FRS does, but GMRS also requires a license for operation. Other than that, the frequencies are so close together that there is no distance advantage gained by changing channels. The manufacturer's distance claims on these radios are pure advertising gimmicks - the radios are line-of-sight only, so if there's anything between the transmitter and receiver, the signal will not get through.
You will need to program the frequency, code and Qt filter (if any) to match one another. For basic operation choose a frequency number and then set your code and Qt filter (if any) to off (zero).

Some number their channels differently, but all FRS/GMRS radios operate in the same mode and will have at least some frequencies in common. Check the channel/frequency lists for both radios and you'll be able to talk to each other.
Scanning Channels
Use scanning to monitor channels for transmissions or to find someone
in your group who has accidentally changed channels.
1. Short press MENU until the "Z" appears. The current setting
On/Off will flash.
2. Press either + or – to turn On or Off.
3. Press the PTT to confirm or MENU to continue set up.
Should do. The available channels are defined by the regulator rather than by the manufacturer.
Only thing to watch out for is similar looking devices designed to be sold into different markets (for instance, radios made to the European PMR446 standard work at a slightly lower frequency than those intended for sale in the US).
