Good Morning, I have a Canon Powershot A400, it is a few years old. When I turn it on it comes up with a "E18" message. Can anyone help me, I've no idea where my book is.

Same code E18 but the lense on my Power Shot S60 will not extend.

My camera is about 5 years old. I guess I am better off buying new than invest money in a fix for this one. Howevr If I can get it to work that would be the best solution.

Anyone having an E18 problem should try this:

Charge the camera for 1 hour, then remove the battery, replace, swith the camera on again and the lens should retract. It worked on my Canon Digital IXUS i zoom

Hope this helps

These cameras invariably employ and metal worm against a nylon cog to move the lens barrel in and out. If dropped on the barrel while open, or the barrel is pressed, the nylon cog is ripped against the worm. There is no longer a smooth spiral for the cog to run on.

Not being funny but, its a fairly old camera with a low picture resolution, I would suggest its probably not worth repairing. Time for a new one.

E18 Error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. If there's any consolation, the A400 lens barrel is very resilient in its design, so there is some hope here:

E18

E18 is the canon fault number for lens error. Is the lens stuck out? does it click when the camera is switched on? Try lightly tapping the lens on a hard surface. This sometimes resets the lens. If all this fails take it to bits! (but watch the flash module as this can give a nasty shock.Big black capacitor) You will see the lens module take the it to bits carefully and re seat the components. I have done a few over the years. It takes about an hour. If you have any more issues contact me.

Having using standard LR6 batteries in a Canon before you will only get 3 or 4 pics max before it drains the batteries. You really need high power AA's like 2300mAH+ rechargeables for any good performance or Lithium AA's

this is very easy to fix- switch your camera on, grab then lens around the edges, and carefully give it a firm twist. It should click and turn on.
