Question about Singer Sewing Machines

Singer 87-4 overlocker

My wife has obtained an old Singer overlocker, and I would like to restore the unit for my wife. I would like to make sure that the unit is compleate, before I spend to much time on it. I have been given the following responce from Singerco. "Your overlocker is model 87-41 it is a 3 thread overlocker and was manufactured in 1919". All very nice, but we do not know how to thread the unit for example. I have pictures and can take more if required. Is any one able to advice how to set this unit up? Threading is most required. I have noticed that tensioning is done via thumb wheels rather than dials.

Wow !! a 1919 overlocker, I would be happy to take a look at the photos of the machine.......take several with the needle in the top, middle (both) and bottom positions so the full cycle can be seen and I will see what we can do for you...what a treat !

The relationships of needle to looper and looper to looper are the most critical.....in the meantime....if you can figure out how to thread it up, use 3 different colours of thread, do a test piece and adjust the tensions as required to create a firm and balanced stitch that meets at the edge neatly......if there is any corrosion on the tension plates, it will need to be polished smooth to effect consistent tension and therefore stitching.......same applies to loopers and thread guides.

Don't forget to mention the problem and your Fixya name !

Replacing needle on Singer overlocker.

The manual should have instructions. Most overlocker needles have a screw that holds each needle in place. Just loosen the screw with the screwdriver that came with your machine, slide the old needle out (note which direction the flat side of the needle is facing), insert the new needle as far up as it will go, and tighten the screw. Don't lose those screws or drop them inside the machine. If you remove a needle so you can serge without it, be sure to tighten that screw so it doesn't fall out.
