Acer laptop comes on then turns off

Sounds like the CPU is overheating. That's about how long it takes if there is no cooling to it. Check the air inlet and exhaust openings on the sides of the laptop. Listen for the fan(s) when you turn it in. If the ports are clogged, or the fans are not operating, this is a good reason for your problem. Many people will try to use a laptop laying on a bed or sofa. This can cause blockage of air intake and result i overheating and overworking the fans causing premature failure. A computer repair center can replace fans, or you can get a good quality external cooling mat to aid you.

How can I clean my heat sink cooling fan?

Hello Friend,
  • Do you find that the keyboard and the bottom of the laptop are very hot? Or the cooling fan of the laptop is noisy? Or the laptop suddenly shuts off but no warning and error message? Why?
  • That may be the problem of the cooling fan and heat sink. They may be dirty, and failure to maintain cleanliness on the inside of the box can and will result in overheating, and sluggish performance due to high temperatures.
To clean : 1.Remove the keyboard, access the cooling modules (fans and heat sink), you do not need to disconnect the keyboard, just place it face down on the palm rest.

  1. 2. Spray compressed air inside both cooling fans and sink heat. You can use canned air sold in any local electronics store.

  2. 3. Connect the keyboard.

My sony viao vgn-cs215j suddenly turn off by itself and it takes 20 minutes before i can re-start and use it again and after 15-20 minutes would shut off by itself again without any warning. what could be...

Sorry i nay be a month late on this thread... but better late than never. My Girlfriends sony vaio VGN-CS215J seems to be doing the exact same thing. After buying one of those computer fans that you rest the computer oneverything seems to be running normal. i would also recommend cleaning your fans inside the computer because dirt dust and grime can hold the fans back from cooling down the laptop efficiently and will cause the safety overheat shutdown to activate and shutdown your computer... that way it does catch on fire or fry any of your hardware inside of your computer.

If that does not work... your fans maybe malfunctioning or not functioning at all. this model of vaio has a grinding fan issue that can be very damaging to your cpu if not fixed.

hope this helps,
Mike Huffstutler

Computer automatically powers down with out warning

It could be overheating, and shutting itself down, to avoid heat-related damage.

Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the AC adapter.
Remove the battery.
Purchase a can of compressed air, and give your computer a "blow-job" -- shooting compressed air everywhere "inside" your laptop, to remove dust.

The dust is acting as an insulator, preventing your computer's fans from cooling itself.

Or, take your laptop to a qualified computer technician, for more trouble-shooting.

My computer will shut down without warning and without going through proper shutdown procedure almost as if it were a hardware issue

It sounds as if the processor is overheating and sending a thermal shutdown order to the power supply. Take compressed air and blow out all the cooling grills and cooling fans as well as any opening that air can move through. If you have access to the panel where the heatsink sits, think about removing the heatsink, cleaning it and cleaning and adding some new thermal paste to the processor. Just a small amount is all you need. Make sure to spread it very thin, it does not need to be thick or it will not transfer the heat appropriately.

Computer shuts off without warning

Usually the problem is overheating. Make sure the fans are not blocked and that they're working properly. May require replacement or cleaning.

Install a temp monitoring application and constantly check the temperature to confirm the cause.

You can install speedfan or nhc or something else of your choice.

Replacement battery for Sony vaio causing computer to hibernate

Yes, every batter have chip inside. This chip communicates with your laptop by providing some OEM info. If battery is made by Sony, then it will communicate fine.
If battery is THIRD PARTY/OFF BRAND, missing info from the NON-SONY chip will result for for those pop-up warnings. No known way to disable it.
