Unable to log on to computer

Yesterday I made a recovery disk using my Windows XP installation disk, as instructed.

Today I am unable to start my computer. I get the following messages:

1. "winlogon.exe--The procedure entry point StrRetToBSTR could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"

2. "lsass.exe--The procedure entry point StrRetToBSTR could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"

3. "User interface Failure--The logon user Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.
Contact your system atministrator or replace the DLL, or the restore the original DLL"

What can I do to log on to my computer?

Thank you.

Stop c0000218

Which operating system ????
If you've just installed Windows XP on your desktop and you've received the following error "STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure" you're not alone.
This is a known issue with XP that can arise from incompatible hardware being installed with XP or, in the worst-case scenario, from a faulty hard disk.
Luckily, it is fairly simple to figure out if your disk needs to be replaced or if a software fix is enough to solve the problem.

Check if your hardware is compatible with Windows XP.
You can find compatibility information at the official Microsoft marketplace website (see Below).
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/
Use the recovery system if your hardware is compatible but is still not working. You can access the recovery console by simply putting in your Windows XP CD before booting your computer.
You will be asked whether you want to "Repair or Recover.
" Simply press the "R" key.

Type in your administrator password.
(You must have admin access to use this option.)

Choose to use the "chkdsk" command line, which will allow you to check your disk.
Once in the chkdsk use the "chkdsk /r" command to check your hard disks for errors.
Press "Enter" to start the disk check.

Type in "chkdsk /f". If any errors are found this will allow your computer to attempt a fix of the broken drive.
Restart your computer after the disk fix has been performed, and attempt to run your Windows XP setup again.
You should have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input might further damage your computer and hard drive

Replace your hard disk if the setup fails with the same message. At this point your hard disk is more than likely broken and needs to be replaced.

How to recover a lost Windows xp password

These techniques to recover a lost xp password are among the more advanced Windows XP Tips and Tricks. In some cases, recovering from a lost password can be very easy though.
For completeness' sake we start with the simplest tips that can help you regain access to a locked account. But even if you find yourself in a more complex situation, please read on. You'll find out what to do.
If you can log in another user account
1. Click on “Start” and enter lusrmgr.msc into the search field:

2. Open “Local Users and Groups” and go to “Users”. Right-click on your account and select “Set Password”:

More advanced password recovery
If there are no other users on your machine to unlock your account, you need to reset your password "offline". Offline means that you boot your pc from outside your usual Windows XP environment using a boot disk or a bootable cdrom.
This offline technique to recover a lost xp password isn't for the faint of heart; the procedure isn't presented in a nice graphical interface and there even is a small risk involved ...
Sometimes the password reset fails and as a consequence you cannot log on with the locked user account afterwards. This doesn't happen often though, and if you are reading this because you need to recover a lost xp password ...
you weren't able to log on after all ...
Of course you will need access to another pc to create a boot disk or bootable cd.

I am unable to install windows xp home edition. I have followed the instructions exactly the way it says to in the help menu and still can't get it to work. Please help

if you use the cd installer you have to tell the machine to start booting from the CD or you might want to set it up in the motherboard's bios as to boot on the CD. Be sure that your hard disk is properly detected and set in the bios especially if it's a SATA drive. You did not mention if it's a desktop or laptop but basically it should be the same process. The laptop usually comes with its own recovery disc with the OS already..hope this helps u...pls come back for a feedback

Raw file system

To fix the problem
Disable the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature in the CPUCool program or similar utility.
Boot to the Windows 2000 or XP installation CD, and at the Startup menu, press R for repair.
In the Recovery Console, type the following:
chkdsk /p
When the CHKDSK process has finished, reboot the computer.
Run the program again.
The error should no longer be reported unless you start using the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature again.

Error occurs with PartitionMagic 8.0
If you encounter Error 1516 with PartitionMagic 8, first run CHKDSK /F on the affected partition. For instructions on how to run CHKDSK, read How to Run Microsoft's CHKDSK from the Command Line. If this does not fix the error, try running PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch, which causes file system errors to be ignored.
To run PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch
Boot from the first PartitionMagic rescue disk.
When you are prompted to insert the second rescue disk, press Ctrl+C to drop to the command (A:>) prompt.
Insert the second PartitionMagic rescue disk and type the following:
pqmagic /ifc
Press Enter.
please go ahead and try the above steps may be it will fix it
